Global Warming
Changes in the Earth’s Climate

What did you just witness? Birds migrating Lighting / storm Flooding Hurricane Snowing etc

What is Global Warming? The increase in air temperature throughout the world.

What can you infer from both pictures?

Do you believe there is global warming?
What happened?

What causes the temperature to increase? Greenhouse effect The gases in the atmosphere trap some of the heat from the Sun thus keeping the Earth warm. Without these gases, the heat would be lost and living things might not survive because it gets too cold.

Enhanced greenhouse effect An accelerated greenhouse effect is caused by a rapid increase in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, trapping more heat from the Sun.
What causes more greenhouse gases to enter the atmosphere? You might want to write it down at least three causes in your note book Then we check our answer later You have 1 min to do so.

Types of greenhouse gases Carbon dioxide

Types of greenhouse gases Nitrous oxide

Types of greenhouse gases CFCs Chlorofluorocarbons
Types of greenhouse gases Methane
Methane from rice field

Landfill

Cow belch
Consequences of global warming
Consequences Changes in weather condition Impact on plants Impact on animals Impact on people Rising sea level
Changes in weather condition Drought Too dry Water evaporate faster
Changes in weather condition Floods Too much water vapour in the atmosphere Too much rainfall
Impact on plants Changes in rainfall and temperature could affect the growth of important crops. Rice Wheat Corn Leading to food shortage & famine

Impact on animals Migration of animals due to temperature changes Yaks and llamas have to move to mountainous or cooler area or else face extinction.

Impact on people Increase in temperature leading to spread of diseases such as Dengue fever Malaria Yellow fever Increasing temperatures may lead to dehydration and heat stroke
Rising sea level Melting of the ice cap Decrease in land area Arable farmland may be destroyed People have to move from coastal area to higher ground.

Can you see the ice cap melting Where does the water goes?
