MEASURING TOOLS
Measuring tools are needed
for pattern alternations and
body measurements to
ensure a well-fitted
garment.
TAPE MEASURE
It is
numbered back
to back, usually
60 inches long
and 150
centimeters, with
metal tips. In the
English system,
the unit of
measurement is
by inch.
RULER
It’s either
made of wood
or plastic and
is 12 inches
long. It is
used to draw
straight lines.
TAILOR’S SQUARE
This tool is also
known as L square. It is
used to draw
perpendicular lines and
to break down
measurements. It has
two arms connecting
perpendicularly; the
longer the arm is 24
inches long while the
shorter arm is 14 inhes
long.
FRENCH CURVE
It is used
to shape the
depth of the
armholes and
neckline of
the pattern.
SEWING GAUGE
It is a
ruler, usually
6 inches long.
It is used to
mark hems
for alteration.
HIP CURVE
It is used
in shaping
hips skirt
hemline and
hip shape
seam lines.
MARKING TOOLS
In making the desired
shape or shape of
garmets, the following
are the different rafting
tools:
TRACING WHEEL
It is used
with tailors
carbon to
transfer
pattern
markings to
fabric.
TAILOR’S CARBON PAPER
It is used
with a
tracing
wheel to
create a
temporary
marking on
fabric.
TAILOR’S CHALK
Is an oil-free
chalk for
transferring
markings.
CUTTING TOOLS
To cut garments
accurately and precisely,
every cutting tool used
should be kept clean,
sharp and grease-free.
CUTTING SHEARS
Are pairs
of bent
handle
blades
used to
easily cut
fabric.
PINKING SHEARS
Used to
finish
edges of
material
to prevent
raveling.
SEAM RIPPER
Is a handy and
inexpensive
device used in
ripping seams.
One side is
sharp and the
other is not to
avoid
damaging the
fabric.
SCISSORS
Are used in
snipping,
trimming
thread
ends, and
cutting
pattern
pieces.
SEWING AIDS AND
MATERIALS/
PINNING TOOLS
To make or repair garments, the
following are the basic sewing
aids and materials.
THIMBLE
Is a small fitted
cap of metal or
plastic that is
worn on
middle finger
for protection
while sewing
by hand.
PIN CUSHION
Is a cushion
where
needles and
pins are kept
for safety.
NEEDLES
Hand needle is
a small pointed
metal that
inserts the
thread into
fabric. It is also
used to make
stitches in
sewing.
DRESSMAKER PINS
Have sharp
points and
will not
leave
marks on
the fabric.
SEWING BOX
Is a
container
where
sewing
tools are
kept.
THREAD
Is a flexible, small
diameter yarn or strand
usually treated with a
surface coating, intended
to be used to stitch one or
more pieces of material .
It may be defined as
smooth thread it also
involved in seaming and
stitching operations.
PRESSING TOOLS AND
EQUIPMENTS
 Ironing is the act of sliding the iron back
and forth using heat and sometimes steam
to remove creases on the garment while
pressing is an act of placing the steam iron
on the part of the finished garment and
pressing it down using force with an up and
down movement. Pressing is done during
sewing construction.
FLAT IRON
Is a device used in
removing wrinkles in
fabric .
The following are the
types of iron:
AUTOMATIC IRON
Is of great help in
pressing. It
avoids damaging
the garments or
fabric by setting
the heat control
to maintain a
suitable
temperature for
any fabric.
NON-AUTOMATIC IRON
Requires
constant
checking of
the heat
temperature
to avoid
damage on
the fabric.
STEAM IRON
Contains
chamber where
water is converted
into steam. It can
be used to create
perfect pleats and
iron out the
wrinkles on
clothes.
IRON BOARD
Is made of wood or
steel wherein cloth and
garments are pressed.
It should be padded,
an old woolen blanket
is an excellent
padding. On top is a
snug-fitting,
removable cover of a
smooth, firm cotton
material.
