What is Facebook?
• Facebook is a social networking service and website launched in
February 2004, operated and privately owned by Facebook Inc.

• As of September 2012, Facebook has more than One billion active
users. more than half of whom use Facebook on a mobile device.
•

Users must register before using the site, after which they may create a
personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange
messages, including automatic notifications when they update their
profile. Additionally, users may join common interest user
groups, organized by workplace, school or college, or other
characteristics, and categorize their friends into lists such as "People
From Work" or "Close Friends".
Founded by Whom and Where?
• Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college
roommates and fellow Harvard University students Eduardo
Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.
• The website's membership was initially limited by the founders to
Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston
area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It gradually added
support for students at various other universities before opening to
high school students, and eventually to anyone aged 13 and over.
Facebook now allows any users who declare themselves to be at least
13 years old to become registered users of the site.
How?
• Mark Zuckerberg wrote Facemash. on October 28, 2003.
• the site was comparable to Hot or Not, and"used photos compiled from
the online facebooks of nine houses, placing two next to each other at a
time and asking users to choose the 'hotter' person“
• Zuckerberg hacked into the protected areas of Harvard's computer
network and copied the houses' private dormitory ID images.
• Zuckerberg faced expulsion and was charged by the administration with
breach of security, violating copyrights, and violating individual privacy.
Ultimately, the charges were dropped
• Zuckerberg began writing code for a new website in January 2004. He
was inspired, he said, by an editorial in The Harvard Crimson about the
Facemash incident. On February 4, 2004, Zuckerberg launched
"Thefacebook", originally located at thefacebook.com.
Now
• A January 2009 Compete.com study ranked Facebook as the most used
social networking service by worldwide monthly active users.

• According to Social Media Today, in April 2010 an estimated 41.6% of
the U.S. population had a Facebook account.
• According to Wikipedia 4.35 crores Indians have facebook account.

What is Twitter?
• Twitter is an online social networking service and microblogging
service that enables its users to send and read text-based messages of
up to 140 characters, known as "tweets".
Founded by Whom and Where?
• Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and by July.
• Twitter Inc. is based in San Francisco, with additional servers and offices
in New York City, Boston, and San Antonio.
How?
• Twitter's origins lie in a "daylong brainstorming session" held by board
members of the podcasting company Odeo.

• Dorsey, then an undergraduate student at New York
University, introduced the idea of an individual using an SMS service to
communicate with a small group.
• The original project code name for the service was twttr, an idea that
Williams later ascribed to Noah Glass, inspired by Flickr and the fivecharacter length of American SMS short codes. The developers initially
considered "10958" as a short code, but later changed it to "40404" for
"ease of use and memorability.“
• Work on the project started on March 21, 2006, when Dorsey published
the first Twitter message at 9:50 PM Pacific Standard Time (PST): "just
setting up my twttr".
Now
• The service rapidly gained worldwide popularity, with over 140 million
active users as of 2012, generating over 340 millions tweets daily and
handling over 1.6 billion search queries per day.
• It has been described as "the SMS of the Internet.“
• Unregistered users can read the tweets, while registered users can post
tweets through the website interface, SMS, or a range of apps for
mobile devices.
• The Twitter website is one of the top ten most visited on the Internet.
• Now a days Many Sports person, Politicians, Movie stars have their
official Twitter Accounts so they can directly communicate with their
friends.
