- 3. INTRODUCTION What is an Operating System? An operating system is software that manages computer hardware and software resources and provides common services for computer programs. It is also known to be a program that acts as an interface between the user and the computer hardware and controls the execution of all kinds of programs.The operating system is an essential components of the system software in a computer system. Application programs usually require an operating system to function. In the simple language it can be said that an OS is a piece of software that s needed to run the programs on a computer or a mobile device.The programs that run on an operating system talk to.

FUNCTIONS OF OPERATING SYSTEM An operating system has its functions of which few will be mentioned below: • Memory Management: an OS keeps tracks of primary memory, i.e., what part of it are in use, by whim, what part are not in use. It allocates the memory when a process request it to do so and otherwise. • Processor Management: an OS keeps tracks of process and status of process, allocates the processor (CPU) to a process and de-allocate when the process is no longer required. • Security: throughout password and some other techniques, it prevents unauthorized access to programs. • Device Management: it manages device communication via their respective drivers, decides which process gets the device, when, and how much rime. • File Management: keeps tracks of information, location, uses, status, etc.

First successful version were Windows 3.0 in 1990. Subsequently released version were Windows 98, Windows 2000,Windows XP,Windows XP Professional,Windows Vista,Windows 7,Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and nowadays Microsoft launches its latest Windows 10.

COMPARISON OF FEATURES MAC OS There is no virus in Mac OS because it can only be installed only on Apple devices WINDOWS OS There are many types of viruses in Windows OS because of a large amount of market share LINUX OS There are lesser amount of viruses compared to Windows because Linux is an open source OS Apple devices are too much expensive Windows is less expensive than Mac Linux software is total free.

This software aren’t compatible with any other OS or different computer products WINDOWS OS Anyone can install any type of game into windows PC because Windows PC is compatible of all type of software and games LINUX OS Linux is open source software so anyone anywhere can program the software that he want. It has a high-level restriction. Due to it restricted levels of customization. This also makes it less prone to viruses Windows is reliable but due to viruses. Linux is an open source OS, which offers self-optimization that allows modification for to suit the user’s specification/usage.

A gamer may prefer a windows OS because of its compatibility, Programmers may prefer Linux to others because of multiprogramming and customizable feature and video/graphics producers will probably tend towards Mac because of its reliability and software optimization.
