INTRODUCTION
What is an Operating System?
An operating system is software that manages computer hardware and software
resources and provides common services for computer programs. It is also known
to be a program that acts as an interface between the user and the computer
hardware and controls the execution of all kinds of programs. The operating
system is an essential components of the system software in a computer system.
Application programs usually require an operating system to function.
In the simple language it can be said that an OS is a piece of software that s
needed to run the programs on a computer or a mobile device. The programs that
run on an operating system talk to.
FUNCTIONS OF OPERATING SYSTEM
An operating system has its functions of which few will be mentioned below:
• Memory Management: an OS keeps tracks of primary memory, i.e., what part of it are in
use, by whim, what part are not in use. It allocates the memory when a process request it to
do so and otherwise.
• Processor Management: an OS keeps tracks of process and status of process, allocates
the processor (CPU) to a process and de-allocate when the process is no longer
required.
• Security: throughout password and some other techniques, it prevents unauthorized
access to programs.
• Device Management: it manages device communication via their respective drivers,
decides which process gets the device, when, and how much rime.
• File Management: keeps tracks of information, location, uses, status, etc.
TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEM
The following are common examples of Operating system of which this discussion is based on
Mac OS
Windows OS
Linux OS
MAC OS
Mac OS was designed only to run on apple computers. Mac OS is a series of
graphical user interface-faced operating system developed by Apple Icc. For
their Macintosh line of computer systems. In 1984, Apple introduced the
Macintosh PC with the Macintosh Operating System. Apple names its OS as
“MAC OS”, beginning in 1997 which previously known as system.
FEATURES OF MAC OS
• SECURITY: Mac OS is a two layered system the attractive GUI sits atop a Unix core, and
Unix is the best-known for its security features. Its simply impossible to install a
destructive Trojan or virus unless the user explicitly allows it root access via typing in the
admin password. Mac OS’s built in firewall is set up to work unobtrusively out of the box as
well as being highly configurable.
• RELIABILITY: because OS X means (MAC OS) was designed from scratch from the
ground up, Mac OS is incredibly stable. Apple controls production from start to finish, so
every part of Mac is designed and tested to work together.
FEATURES OF MAC OS (CONT’D)
• Ease of use: Apple is known for hiring the best industrial and
interface designers around, it shows in the intuitive nature of the GUI.
It is designed to just work. Advanced users have use command line
access with the terminal app.
• Integration with apple and other products: it will automatically
recognizes and work with any other Apple products such as iPhone,
Cinema Display, Airport, and iPad.
WINDOWS OS
This is the most used operating system among others. Microsoft Windows operating system was
developed by Microsoft to overcome the limitation of its own MS-DOS operating system. First
successful version were Windows 3.0 in 1990. Subsequently released version were Windows 98,
Windows 2000,Windows XP,Windows XP Professional,Windows Vista,Windows 7,Windows 8,
Windows 8.1 and nowadays Microsoft launches its latest Windows 10.
FEATURES OF WINDOWS OS
• Easy to use: Microsoft windows is easy to use as compared to other operating systems in
the modern era therefore Windows is most popular OS in the world.
• Performance monitor: windows gives you and advantage of checking the performance of
your pc. Anyone can check the performance of its windows pc by pressing “alt+ctrl+del”
keys at the same time.
• Files management: windows manage your files automatically into a specific location on
the basis of the type of file. Eg.,“images were automatically sent in Pictures folder”.
FEATURES OF WINDOWS OS (CONT’D)
• Plug and play: windows gives plug and play option to its user. There is no need to
install driver of any external peripheral devices like “web camera’s, joysticks data
traveler devices.”
• Windows is a MS-DOS based operating system.
LINUX OS
Linux was originally built by Linus Torvalds at the University of Helsinki in 1991. Linux is a
Unix-like, kernel-based, fully memory-protected, multitasking operating system.
FEATURES OF LINUX OS
• Open source operating system: Linux is an open source operating system. Any
programmer can modify it due to its needs.
• Free software: Linux is a free software anyone can download it from the web and install it
on its pc.
• Many pc user can install Linux to its system there is no specific requirements for
installing it.
FEATURES OF LINUX OS (CONT’D)
• Portable: Linux can work on different types of hardware in the same way.
• Linux provides special interpreter program which can be used to execute commands of the
OS, it can be used to perform various types of operation.
• Security: Linux uses authentication features like password, for protection/encryption of
data / access control to specified files.
COMPARISON OF FEATURES
MAC OS
There is no virus in Mac
OS because it can only be
installed only on Apple
devices
WINDOWS OS
There are many types of
viruses in Windows OS
because of a large
amount of market share
LINUX OS
There are lesser amount of
viruses compared to
Windows because Linux is
an open source OS
Apple devices are too
much expensive
Windows is less expensive
than Mac
Linux software is total free.
COMPARISON OF FEATURES
MAC OS
Mac OS uses software
designed and created for
only it. This software aren’t
compatible with any other
OS or different computer
products
WINDOWS OS
Anyone can install any type
of game into windows PC
because Windows PC is
compatible of all type of
software and games
LINUX OS
Linux is open source
software so anyone
anywhere can program
the software that he want.
It has a high-level
restriction. Due to it
restricted levels of
customization. This also
makes it less prone to
viruses
Windows is reliable but
due to viruses.
Linux is an open source OS, which
offers self-optimization that allows
modification for to suit the user’s
specification/usage.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, no operating system is really better, the choice is up to the user. A user
will decide what type of OS he will like to use. A gamer may prefer a windows OS
because of its compatibility, Programmers may prefer Linux to others because of
multiprogramming and customizable feature and video/graphics producers will
probably tend towards Mac because of its reliability and software optimization.
