Spodoptera frugiperdaA new Invasive Pest
-Succeeding to the recent Tomato Pin Worm
Rugose Spiralling White fly
Mr.S.SRINIVASNAIK
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
DEPARTMENT OF ENTOMOLOGY

NEW INVASIVE/ALIEN INSECT
Identification & Damage assessment
 Based on the Roving Survey: 9 July to 12
July 2018
 ICAR-NBAIR team (Dr A. N. Shylesha,
Principal scientist)
 Chikkaballapur- Karnataka on maize
 Damage estimation > 70 %
 Different locations also: Hassan, Belur &
Shimoga
 Dr S. K. Jalali and team molecular
confirmation
 The fall armyworm is native to the tropical
region of the western hemisphere from the
United States to Argentina
 In 2016, it was recorded in Africa causing
serious damage on maize crop
DIFFERENTIATION
Spodoptera litura
Noctuidae: Lepidoptera
Spodoptera frugiperda
Noctuidae: Lepidoptera
DIFFERENTIATION
Chilo partellus
Crambidae: Lepidoptera
Spodoptera frugiperda
Noctuidae: Lepidoptera
BIOLOGY/LIFE CYCLE
 Egg laying occurs on the inner side of the whorl and
also on the under surface of the leaf in in a mass -89
eggs arranged in layers/patch
 First instar larva is greenish in colour with black head
while the final instars are with dark grey head and dull
grey body with white subdorsal and lateral white lines.
 The mature larva is with a white inverted “Y” mark on
the head and with distinct black spots on the body.
 Arrangement pattern of black spots is square on 8th
and trapezoidal on 9th segment
Spodoptera frugiperda a new invasive pest_SSNAIK_AGCJGL_PJTSAU
A) Young larva leaving silvery transparent membrane
B) Larva feeding inside whorl with faecal matter
C&D) tassel feeding by larvae;
E & F) Irregular holes on the leaves
SYMPTOMS OF DAMAGE
DIFFERENTIATION-DAMAGE
Spodoptera frugiperda
Noctuidae: Lepidoptera
Chilo partellus
Crambidae: Lepidoptera
Shot holes Irregular cuttings
MANAGEMENT
Monitoring
1.Erection of the pheromone traps @ 4/acre for adults
Knee High Stage
2.Carbofuran 3G @ 4 kg/ac in leaf whorls
3.Put a half handful of wood ash or fine sand in the whorl of the
attacked plants
4.Spray any of the a)Chlorpyriphos 20EC @ 2 ml/litre
(Incidence is less <5%)
b) Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC @ 0.3 ml/litre
C) Spinosad 45.0% SC @ 0.4 ml/litre
d) Emamectin benzoate 5% SG @ 0.5 ml/litre
Head high stage (Unable to carry out the spraying
Poison bait technique:
5 kg: Rice bran
½ kg: Jaggery
½ kg/litre: Chlorpyriphos 50 EC/Carbaryl 50 WP
As it is falls under the Noctuidae and comes
under cut worms group, more over it attacking the field
crop, we can save the crop by proper monitoring and
applying recommended chemicals at right stage
