Singapore wanted to merge with Malaya for political and economic reasons. Politically, Singapore sought independence from Britain and a merger would help fight communism with Malaya's anti-communist government. Economically, Singapore lacked natural resources and a merger would provide access to Malaya's hinterland and resources while also creating employment opportunities and reducing unemployment by allowing Singaporeans to work in Malaya. The merger was also meant to reduce communist influence from China with Malaya's anti-communist leadership.
