INDIA-GLOBAL AGRICULTURAL GIANT:
2
India is a global agricultural powerhouse. India is a “giant on shaky ground”
“I know of no pursuit in which more real and important services can be rendered
to any country than by improving its agriculture, its breed of useful animals, and
other branches of a husbandman's cares”-GEORGE WASHINGTON
World’s largest
• Producer of Milk, Pulses and Spices
• Cattle herd
• Largest area under Wheat ,Rice and Cotton
Second largest
• Producer of Rice , Cotton and Sugarcane
• Farmed fish, Sheep and goat meat ,Fruit ,Vegetables and Tea
DECLINE IN GDP CONTRIBUTION OF AGRICULTURE
SECTOR:
For a country which is the world’s largest producer with 50% of its population
involved in agriculture, this trend is alarming. This could mean 50% of its
population is on the verge of joblessness .
3
GOVERNMENT AND ITS MEASURES:
4
National Agricultural Innovation Sub Project “Integrated
farming system for sustainable rural livelihood “.The Indian
Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the World Bank
have been implementing a joint National Agricultural
Innovation Project (NAIP) in the country.
Small-scale farmers produce food
for 70% of the global population.
India needs to pay an immediate
attention towards its small scale
farmers
At present there are 567
KVKs(Krishi Vigyan
Kendras ) established in
the country, transferring
technologies in agriculture
and allied activities to the
farming/Planting
community. INDIAN FARMER
SUICIDE: ONE IN
EVERY 30
MINUTES
SUCH IS THE PRESSURE
THAT AN ESTIMATED
250,000 FARMERS HAVE
COMMITTED SUICIDE IN
INDIA OVER THE PAST 15
YEARS.
TECHNOLOGY IN AGRICULTURE:
5
There are many new and advanced technologies that
could be useful .But in a country with more than 20%
farmers living below poverty line, affording the latest
mostly imported technology is not an affordable
solution.
Hydroponics is method
of growing plants using
mineral nutrient
solutions in water,
without soil.
Valcent is pioneering a
hydroponic-farming system
that grows plants in rotating
rows, one on top of another.
Nature’s ploy in pushing the farmer to this pathetic
state:
Corruption
and
middlemen
Gamble on
monsoon
vagaries of
weather
Miniaturizat-
ion of
agricultural
land
Boomerang
effect of green
revolution
Inefficient
investment
particularly in
infrastructure
Migration
to other
sectors
Illiteracy, socio-
economic
backwardness
Rural poverty
Very slow pace
of
implementing
land reforms
Inadequate or
inefficient
finance and
marketing
services

SOLUTIONS PROPOSED:
Reduction of present rate of degradation and loss of productive farmland
due to erosion, salinization, water lagging and nutrient depletion.
Development of agroforestry projects.
Provision of a system of tropical agricultural research stations.
Learning how to make optimum use of by products of agriculture .
Mixing agriculture with other means of earning .
Reforming agriculture practices to be less harmful to forest.
Improving the distribution of agricultural products.
Reduction of environmental impacts of new technologies.
Reformation of policies relating to water management allocation and distribution.
Retention of trees to as crops to protect water and soil resources.
7
SOLUTIONS PROPOSED:
8
Increasing farmer’s access to market- reduce the
chain of middlemen promote SHGs and
cooperatives.
Bridge the information gap b/w farmer and
technology
Reducing political manipulation in current price
setting system-MSP
Promoting farmers unions at village level
Promoting vegetable cultivation prior to commercial
crops as they yield better results and are less prone
to push a family into famine.
restricted use of pesticides to reduce further soil
depletion
Animal rearing with cultivation could make farmers
'future bit more secure.
Adapt to climatic changes as climate change cannot
be reversed.
Test new ideas Understanding your options
Include more options for agriculture in education like professional bachelor degrees in agriculture and
agricultural sciences

INDIPENDENT AND
SECURE FARMER
Precision farming
Try Integrated systems
SOLUTIONS PROPOSED:

An innovative irrigation
technique using waste glucose
bottle. In this technique, a cut
is made at the top of waste
glucose bottle for filling of
water and discharge of water
could be regulated by glucose
regulator system.
Agro ecology-
• mimics natural ecosystems
• produce more food using
fewer resources
• improve soil fertility, adapt
to climate change
• reduce farming input costs
PERMACULTURE-
• Multifunctional
• organic, low-input, and biodiversity
• intercropping trees, planting perennials,
water harvesting, and resource
recycling.
Schemes introduced by
the national govt. for
upliftment
Organic farming
Polyculture
Aquaponics
Hydroponics
Public private
partnership(PPP)
Formation of unions
Use of modern machinery

our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in
education. The human mind is our fundamental resource.
Rise in economy
Educating farmers
Increase in agricultural productivity
We have everything in this world ,to improvise the productivity of our Indian farmers ,ofcourse
more than abundant technology ,we have the world which is sharing their thoughts. Yet we are
in a state, that the field which is a source for bread to almost 50% of our nation’s population is
in miserable state.
