In combined cycle power plant of Bangladesh.Thera have gas turbine
and steam turbine. For steam turbine need so much water; For cooling
and for production. For cooling we use fresh water like underground
water or river water. In production we need huge demineralize water. So
that we need to control water and steam quality in our chemical
laboratory. We can able to test 25-30 parameters water in our lab. We
some smart instruments and equipments in our lab. We have PPE
(personal protective equipment) for lab.
We will discuss about our laboratory safety , lab equipment and lab
instruments.

Before enter chemical lab we follow some precaution
● Before enter lab need to be neat and clean ourself.
● Need to change shoe. which we wear in field work and wear dedicate
sandel for lab.
● Then we wear lab apron.
● Wear gloves before work.
● Always maintain safety in every step of work in laboratory

General Hazards in a laboratory

Jr.Assistant Manager(Chemical)
❏ Beakers are useful as a reaction container or
to hold liquid or solid samples. They are also
used to catch liquids from titrations and filtrates
from filtering operations.
❏ Bunsen Burners are sources of heat.
Lab equipment

❏ Burets are for addition of a precise volume of liquid. The volume of liquid added
can be determined to the nearest 0.01 mL with practice.
❏ Clay Triangles are placed on a ring attached to a ring stand as a support for a
funnel, crucible, or evaporating dish.
❏ Erlenmeyer Flasks are useful to contain reactions or to hold liquid samples. They
are also useful to catch filtrates.
❏ Glass Funnels are for funneling liquids from one container to another or for
filtering when equipped with filter paper.
❏ Graduated Cylinders are for measurement of an amount of liquid. The volume of
liquid can be estimated to the nearest 0.1 mL with practice.
Lab equipment
Md.Arifull Hoque Shaheen
Diploma in Chemical Engineering
Jr.Assistant Manager(Chemical)
❏ Pipets are used to dispense small quantities of liquids.
❏ Test Tubes are for holding small samples or for containing reactions.
❏ Test tube holders are for holding test tubes when tubes should not be
touched
❏ Tongs are similar in function to forceps but are useful for larger items.
❏ Volumetric Flasks are used to measure precise volumes of liquid or to make
precise dilutions.
❏ Wash bottles are used for dispensing small quantities of distilled water.
❏ Watch glasses are for holding small samples or for covering beakers or
evaporating dishes.
❏ Wire Gauze on a ring supports beakers to be heated by Bunsen burners

❏ Florence flasks (boiling flasks) Has a round bottom and long neck.Used to hold
Used to hold liquids and can be easily swirled and heated.
❏ Spatula - to scoop small amounts of a solid substance and to scrape something.
❏ Stirring/Glass Rod - used to mix chemicals and liquids for laboratory purposes
❏ Volumetric Pipette - a tool for measuring precise volumes of a liquid.
❏ Evaporating Dish - used to heat and evaporate liquids.
❏ Petri Dish - use to culture cells, which can be bacteria, animal, plant, or fungus.
❏ Desiccators - used for preserving moisture-sensitive items.
❏ Mortar & Pestle - used to crush solids into powders for experiments, usually to
better dissolve the solids.

❏ Alcohol Lamp – Used to heat things.
❏ Test Tube brush - used to easily clean the inside of a test tube.
❏ Separatory Funnel - used in liquid-liquid extractions to separate (partition) the
components of a mixture between two immiscible solvent phases of different
densities.
❏ Porcelain Crucible - used to heat small quantities to very high temperatures.
❏ Test Tube Rack - is used to hold test tubes while reactions happen in them or
while they are not needed.
❏ Iron Stand – used to hold the iron ring and supports.
❏ Iron Ring – used to hold or support beakers during experiments while connected
to the iron stand.

❖ How to open reagent bottle?
Two methods.First method hold the cap and reagent bottle same hand.
Second method keep cap on the table and inside surface up.
❖ How to use wash bottle?
Squeeze tightly or gently. To control the water from wash bottle.
❖ How to strike a match?
Take a match and strike it against the side of match box. Shake a few time for
extinguish the flame.
❖ How to transfer a solid with spatula ?
Used the bent end of a spatula to pick up a small amount of solid.
❖ How to heat a solution ?
Fasten a test tube holder to the top part of the test tube. Place bottom part of test tube
in the bunsen flame.

❖ How to transfer a solution ?
Gently squeeze the bulb of dropper. Release the pressure for draw some
solution. Let the tip of the dropper touch the neck of bottle to avoid dropping
the solution during transfer. Squeeze the dropper to take solution in the test
tube.
❖ How to mix solution?
Here the five methods of mixing solution
1. Slightly shake the test tube
2. Use the glass rod
3. Use an index finger to tap on the bottom of the test tube
4. Stopper the test tube and shake the solution
5. Stopper the test tube and gently up and down for mixing.

1. Analytical Balance - An analytical balance is a type of balance that is commonly used for the measurement of
mass in the sub-milligram range
2. Bunsen burner - Bunsen burner is a standard tool used in laboratories, named after Robert Bunsen. It is a
gas-fueled single open flame.
3. Colony Counter - A colony counter is used to estimate the density of a liquid culture by counting the number
of CFU (colony forming units) on an agar or culture plates.
4. Deep Freezer - A deep freeze can be used for the preservation of different things used in the laboratories for a
very long period of time.
5. Hot plate - A hot plate is a stand-alone appliance used in microbiology laboratories as a tabletop heating system.
