Overview What are the Summary Accounts ? An account whose balance represents the sum of detail account balances is ''Summary account'' which can be used for faster reporting and inquiry as well as in formulas and Mass-allocations.  This is kind of on-line balance inquiry and you don’t directly enter anything.

Difference between Summary vs Detail Summary Accounts Provide many efficiencies for business processing  Provide accurate and direct posting for transactions and journals Detailed Accounts Like Expense, etc
Summary Accounts Versus Parent Values Parent Values Summary Accounts Store summary balances. Do not store account balances. View balances online. Cannot be viewed online because they do not maintain balances. Use in recurring journals or  budget formulas. Cannot be used in recurring journals or budget formulas because they do not maintain balances. Use the constant segment type  in Mass Allocations. Use the looping segment type in Mass Allocations. Get quicker FSG reporting because no summations are  required. Result in slower FSG reporting  because summations are required.

Rollup Groups Rollup group is collection of parents segment values for a given segment A value cannot belong to a rollup group unless it is  a parent value that has child values Parent values and child values belong to same value set, which is  attached to a key flexfield segment

Summary Account Template Summary account template are used to: Creates summary accounts  Perform online summary inquiries Speed processing of financial reports The number of summary accounts the template creates depends on the template segment values Number of Detail Segment Values for each    segment with a “D”  Value  Number of summary   X account created   =  Number of Parent Segment Values for Each  Segment   with a Rollup Group  Name   X  1 For Each Segment with a “T” value
Template Values Your template creates and maintains a summary account for every detail segment. This value creates the most summary accounts of any template value. Your template creates and maintains a summary account that sums balances of all detail segments. Your template creates and maintains a summary account for each parent segment value assigned to the rollup group you specify. D Value T Value Rollup Group
Creation of Summary Account Suppose a company has the following account segments and values : D  -  T  -  Expense Company Department Account 00 - INDIA 10-  UK 100- East 200- West 1001- Expense A 1002- Expense B 2000- Parent Value Rollup Group = Expense To create summary accounts to reflect total expense for each company, all departments, the following summary template would be defined: D  -  T  -  Expense This template would create the following summary accounts: 00  -  T  -  2000 10  -  T  -  2000
Maintain Summary Account Adding child ranges Removing child ranges Assigning a new value to a Rollup Group Removing a Rollup group assignment Changing a rollup group assignment
Maintaining Summary Template Posting automatically updates summary templates if you have added new detail accounts since your last posting for your ledger To improve the performance of your posting program, run the Maintain Summary Templates program to update your summary templates
Using Budgetary Control Step 1.  To set up Summary Account Budgetary Control Options Step 2.  Enter budgetary control options for Summary Account Template Step 3.  Choose Incremental Add/Delete Summary Templates from the submit Request window
