Dear Friends,At the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, love is our first gift to those we
help. Each day in homes all across our community, St. Vincent de Paul
members visit suffering families. This has been a particularly difficult
year for our neighbors in need. All around them they hear stories
of economic recovery, but there has been no recovery for many
families. Middle class jobs that once ensured a decent living have
given way to low-end and part-time work. Poverty is seeping into
suburban neighborhoods where it was once rare, and physical needs
are accompanied by a sense of despair, shame and hopelessness.
And yet, in the midst of this need … love grows.
Into these lives, St. Vincent de Paul volunteers bring practical
help, emotional support and spiritual nourishment. A little boy who
is hungry gets a hot, nourishing meal. An elderly man who sleeps on
the floor is given a bed, and the family who would be on the street
tomorrow receives help with their rent tonight. The distraught mother
who has given up all hope finds the comfort of a listening ear and a
loving heart. One hand reaches to grasp another, and love grows.
Last year, our volunteers personally visited the homes of people
in need more than 7,500 times, bearing the gifts you so generously
gave. Thanks to you, hope and love replaced fear and discourage-
ment in the lives of more than 120,000 neighbors in need. And
love grows.
In the following pages, you will find the stories of a small selection
of families and individuals whose lives have changed because you
answered Christ’s call to love one another. Out of the true kindness
of your heart, love
grows to inspire

Every week we are forced to
turn away local families who
are in danger of becoming
homeless because we do not
have enough resources to
help them. Your gift of $500
will save a family from
becoming homeless.
Christopher and his grand-
daughter, Sally, have a
radiating love for one an-
other. As Sally bounces around
brightening everyone’s day, she
keeps an eye on her grandpa, en-
couraged by his loving laugh of
approval. When Sally snuggles
up to her grandpa, he transforms
from a tough, hardworking
man into a gentle and devoted
grandfather. Together, they are
at peace and at home.
Sally lives with Christopher
and he does everything he can
for his lovable, bright-eyed
granddaughter. “It’s all about
her,” said Christopher. Sally’s
parents love her but they are
both still young, so Christopher
tries to spend as
much time with her
as possible.
Christopher
recently fell on hard
times when he was
laid-off from his job.
“Before I knew it, our
electric and water
were turned off and
we were behind on
our rent,” he said.
Panicked and con-
cerned about what
would happen to
Sally if they lost their
home, Christopher
worked hard to raise
the money for his water and
electric bill. However, he did
not have enough to pay his rent,
and his landlord was ready to
evict him.
That is when Christopher
turned to St. Vincent de
Paul. Just a few hundred
dollars in rental assis-
tance was enough to
save Christopher and
Sally from becoming
homeless.
Christopher recent-
ly found a new job and
is now secure in his
home. He is looking
forward to teaching
Sally how to ride her
bike in their drive-
way, relieved that he will be able
to watch her grow up safe and
happy in their home.
“She says she wants to be a
model someday,” Christopher
beamed. “With that smile, I know
she can do it.”
Because of your
generosity, 5,210
families received rent
or utility assistance
in 2012. Families
who receive rent and
utility assistance meet
one-on-one with our
staff and volunteers
to work toward long-
term solutions through
budget counseling,
ﬁnancial literacy classes
and more. 90 percent of
the families we helped
were still in their homes
at least 6 months after
receiving assistance.

Amber wants to be the
kind of mother her
children can look up
to. She wants to teach them not
only with words but also by her
actions. She dreams of being a
high school graduate.
A bright, caring wife and
mother of five rambunctious
children, Amber has decided
to make getting her GED a
priority. Her children are getting
older, and she wants them to
value education. “You can’t tell
your kids that their degree is
important if you don’t have one
yourself,” she said.
That is why each morning,
Amber gets her children off to
school and then heads to the
St. Vincent de Paul Outreach
Center in Winton
Hills. There, she joins
up to two dozen other
students aged 18 to
56 diligently working
toward a better life
that begins with a high
school degree. The
small class size and
caring atmosphere are
helping Amber succeed.
“The teachers help
you in a loving manner
and it feels like they
really care,” Amber said.
“I truly believe that they
are God’s disciples.”
She hopes that with hard
work, someday she will proudly
add her own photo to the wall
of pictures recognizing past
GED graduates.
Amber is just one of many
parents doing their best to
raise their children in Winton
Hills, one of Cincinnati’s most
impoverished — and intimidat-
ing — neighborhoods. The St.
Vincent de Paul Outreach Center
is a beacon of hope in this
troubled area, offering an array
of programs that help families
develop the stability, knowledge,
love, and support to build a
better future.
Four out of five adults strug-
gle with joblessness, near-
poverty or reliance on wel-
fare for at least part of their
lives. St. Vincent de Paul
provided basic necessities
to 120,000 people in 2012.
In addition, our Outreach
Centers in the West End and
Winton Hills offer financial
literacy classes, GED classes
and support groups for men
and women. St. Vincent de
Paul’s efforts support the
work of many other pro-
grams and agencies; last
year we were the top referral
agency for the United Way’s
211 helpline.

“We are all God’s
people, and that’s
exactly how they
treat me when I’m at the St. Vin-
cent de Paul Charitable Phar-
macy. Everyone is so friendly to
me and supportive.”
After a 30-year career in
quality control for an airplane
engine parts manufacturer,
David suffered from two blood
clots. Bleeding caused by his
medication made it impossible
for him to continue working, and
he reluctantly resigned from his
job. Following a series of heart
attacks, this once healthy and
vibrant man was diagnosed with
emphysema and heart disease.
David faced a bleak future. He
needed 18 different medicines
daily, costing $900 per month
out of pocket. He faced an im-
possible choice.
“I can choose to pay for my
medicine,” David said, “but I
would lose my home
and have to walk to the
pharmacy from under a
bridge somewhere.”
He has seen the im-
pact of not being able to
afford the right medica-
tion. A friend and col-
league died in David’s
arms from severe
respiratory problems
because he could not
afford his prescribed
inhaler. David knows without
proper medications, he faces a
similar fate.
“This is life or death for me. If
it wasn’t for St. Vincent de Paul, I
would be dead.”
Despite the many hardships
life has brought to David, the
kindness shown to him by St.
Vincent de Paul volunteers has
lifted his spirit. He has vowed
to live his life fully and have a
positive outlook every day. “The
amount of time isn’t as impor-
tant to me now as the quality of
that time. It’s being at peace with
God. It’s spending time with my
family, especially my grandkids. St.
Vincent de Paul gives me both
of those.”
In 2012, the Charitable Phar-
macy ﬁlled 45,130 prescrip-
tions, valued at more than
$5 million. The Charitable
Pharmacy provides
prescription medi-
cation to those in
need while guiding
them toward long-
term health through
health screenings,
medication adher-
ence counseling,
nutrition counseling
and more.

L eslie has worked hard
to pull herself and her
children out of poverty,
but it is not a cycle that
is easily broken. She dreamed of
being a chef, so she graduated
from Cincinnati Cooks and even
earned a special
certiﬁcation in
ﬁne dining to
ensure that she
would succeed in
her new career.
She found a
job at a restaurant
and was looking
forward to the
new life that lay
ahead. Then, the
restaurant began
to cut back her
hours. Instead of
cooking gourmet
meals to support
her family, Leslie
was skipping meals herself
to feed her children.
Leslie’s children cling to her,
sneaking kisses and hugs
whenever possible. They think
the world of her, but Leslie
felt that she was failing them
because she could not provide
for them in the most basic
way. That is when Leslie turned
to St. Vincent de Paul’s Edyth
and Carl Lindner Choice Food
Pantry for help. “Everyone is so
friendly,” Leslie said. “The
volunteers don’t make me feel
bad, and it is such a relief to
have food for my children.”
Thanks to you, Leslie knows
her children will be fed while she
seeks a job.
In the meantime, she is doing
all she can to give back. An
adult leader for the teen group
at a church in the West End, she
encourages the group to volun-
teer in the community. “A lot of
people who go to our church are
not from the community, and
they don’t understand how hard
it can be to rise above poverty,”
Leslie said. “I take them to vol-
unteer at places like St. Vincent
de Paul so that they can meet
people in the community and
get a better understanding of the
struggles they face.”

One day in April, Kayla’s
tiny daughter stopped
breathing, and every-
thing in her life turned upside
down.
Kayla’s young son DeMarco
had been excited to welcome
home a little sister to love and
care for, but was heartbroken
when the baby passed away.
Losing her daughter to Sudden
Infant Death Syndrome only
weeks after she was born
plummeted Kayla into a deep
depression. Her pain was
paralyzing, preventing her
from working or even caring
for DeMarco.
Kayla’s mother, Nicole, did all
she could for her daughter and
brought Kayla and DeMarco
to live in her apartment. She
cared for DeMarco and worked
extra hours to cover expenses.
But between the funeral costs,
medical costs, and Kayla’s loss
of income, the family’s savings
was completely drained in just a
few months. Nicole was about to
lose her home.
In their darkest hour, Nicole
and Kayla turned to St. Vin-
cent de Paul. Your generous
donations to the St. Vincent de
Paul Thrift Store and Donation
Centers helped this grieving
family pay their rent and pro-
vide clothing and furniture for
growing DeMarco. Kayla still
struggles with the death of her
young daughter, but she has
returned to work at a fast food
restaurant and is staying strong
for DeMarco. The family is still
working to get back on their feet,
but the kindness and generosity
of St. Vincent de
Paul’s donors and
volunteers has given
them new hope for
the future.
St. Vincent
de Paul
volunteers meet with people every day
who have endured unforeseen tragedies
that have sent their lives spiraling out of
control. Sometimes it is the death of a
family member or an illness, other times
it is something as simple as a car repair or
having their work hours cut. You can give
hope to families in every neighborhood of
Cincinnati by donating your new or gently-
used clothing and household items to a St.
Vincent de Paul Thrift Store and Donation
Center. Donations can be dropped off at
any of our seven thrift store locations,

my aunt and uncle,
and the Conference
Members of St. Bartholomew.”
Ezeckel, his wife Kenya and
their playful children, Gbinal
and Latisha, were not always
such a joyful family. Just a few
short months ago, they were
living in the midst of civil war
in Liberia, stepping over dead
bodies. They hid in the forests,
sleeping against trees.
Then, there came a miracle
— an opportunity to move to
America. An aunt and uncle
whom Ezeckel had never person-
ally met learned of their plight
and agreed take them in. Ezeckel
and his family moved into their
aunt and uncle’s humble home
in Mt. Healthy. They had no jobs,
no driver’s licenses, no car, and
very few possessions.
Almost immediately, Ezeckel
set out to find a church where
he could give thanks to God for
bringing his family to America.
When he and his
uncle drove past St.
Bartholomew Parish,
Ezeckel was imme-
diately drawn to the
church. “I am not
sure why we stopped
at that church that
day, but we did,” said
Ezeckel’s uncle. It was
a stop that changed
Ezeckel’s life.
The St. Vincent de
Paul members at St.
Bartholomew wel-
comed Ezeckel and his
family with open arms.
First, they provided
basics like clothing
and food. Then, they
worked with the family
for months, helping
them find employment
at one of St. Vincent de Paul’s
Thrift Store and Donation Cen-
ters, transporting
their children to
school, and even
helping them
find their very
own apartment.
Thousands
of miles from
their native
country and
all that was fa-
miliar, Ezeckel
and Kenya
found a new
family to love
and cherish
them. When the time came for
their children to be baptized,
they turned to Conference
member John and his wife to
be the Godparents.
Suburban poverty in
Cincinnati has increased
by 83 percent since 2000,
with many at-risk families
now isolated in suburban
communities where few
services are available. St.
Vincent de Paul’s network of
950 parish-based volunteers
serving more than 71 Cincin-
nati neighborhoods places
us at the front lines of subur-
ban poverty, uniquely posi-
tioned to reach and assist
these families. In 2012, our
members visited the homes
of those in need 7,447 times,
helping 37,078 people.

“I’ve learned the true
virtue of serving others
with my whole self, realizing that
my weaknesses are as valuable
as my strengths. I have been
challenged in areas of communi-
ty life, ministry, personal spiri-
tual, intellectual and emotional
growth, and am ﬁnding joy and
a sense of purpose through this
whole process,” said a 2012 Vin-
centian Volunteer of Cincinnati.
Rooted in the mission of St.
Vincent de Paul, Vincentian
Volunteers of Cincinnati (VVC)
is the only faith-based, year-long
residential service program in
Cincinnati. Bringing St. Vincent
de Paul’s motto, “neighbors
helping neighbors,” to life, VVC
members work full-time at the
West End Outreach Center
providing person-to-person
service to those in need,
serve as members of a St.
Vincent de Paul Conference,
facilitate immersion experi-
ences through the Ozanam
Center for Service Learning,
and live in an intentional
community in the West
End, regularly engaging
in spiritual formation and
community growth.
Our hope is that the VVC
program will become part
of a lifelong commitment
these young adults make
to live their faith as passion-
ate, committed Vincentians
who will carry on the work of
the Society in the future by
walking alongside their neigh-
bors in need.
Ozanam Center
for Service Learning
The Ozanam Center for
Service Learning offers day-
long to week-long immersion
experiences that connect
people from diverse back-
grounds, engage partici-
pants in poverty and social
justice issues and grow a
commitment to service in
community. Participants
range from school, St. Vin-
cent de Paul member, and
adult groups. To learn more

In 2012, our Vincentian Volunteers of
Cincinnati served more than 37,000 of our
neighbors in need and facilitated Ozanam
Center Retreats for a total of 308 participants.

the way they see the world and created

BOB RAHE MATTRESS FUND
Every night, hundreds of chil-
dren and elderly neighbors
sleep on a cold, hard ﬂoor. The
Bob and Sylvia Rahe Mattress
Fund provides comfort and rest
to neighbors in need by giving
them a mattress, box spring, and
bed rail set. In 2012, St. Vincent
de Paul provided 786 beds to
local adults and children.

mother tucks her little girl
into a cozy bed … love grows.

FOOD FROM THE HEART
From Delhi to Anderson Town-
ship, and Bridgetown to Finney-
town, requests for help with food
— the most basic of all needs
— are on the rise. During Kroger
and Fox 19’s Food From the
Heart Drive, donations are ac-
cepted in food collection barrels
and coin-boxes at Kroger store
locations. Our volunteers carry
your gifts directly to the homes
of hungry families in your local
neighborhood.

HOLIDAY PROGRAMS
As suburban poverty grows,
more and more families face a
meager holiday, unable to afford
a holiday meal or Christmas
gifts for their children. During
the 2012 holiday season, you
gave hope and holiday cheer to
more than 7,467 local families
by generously supporting pro-
grams such as Thanksgiving
and Christmas food baskets,
Adopt-A-Family, Angel Toy
Program, Holiday Hearts, and
Shop with a Bengal.
It’s chilly on the St. Vincent
de Paul dock where stacks
of food and Thanksgiving
turkeys are ready to be
distributed to the struggling
families that will soon stream
through the doors. But for
the moment all is quiet as
old and young, black and
white, helper and helped join
hands and bow heads in a

St. Vincent de Paul partners with
the student designers from the
University of Cincinnati College
of Design, Architecture, Art and
Planning (DAAP) for one of the
year’s most anticipated events —
RetroFittings! Each sophomore
design student is challenged to
design an ensemble using just
$10 worth of goods they select
from a St. Vincent de Paul Thrift
Store. A lively, one-of-a-kind
show spotlighting the fashions
is the highlight of the evening.
Proceeds support the mission of
St. Vincent de Paul.

The Ozanam Center for Service Learning offers re-
treat experiences for adults and students. Retreats
include a balance of interaction with neighbors of
diverse backgrounds, personal reflection, service
activities, and discovery of practical ways to break
down barriers and create lasting change.
