“ We are changing the environment. The average young person now spends nine hours a day exposing their brain to technology. Evolution is an advancement from moment to moment and what we are seeing is technology affecting our evolution." Prof. Gary Small , UCLA 2009
Is technology producing a decline in critical thinking and analysis?
As technology has played a bigger role in our lives, our skills in critical thinking and analysis have declined , while our visual skills have improved , according to research by Patricia Greenfield, UCLA distinguished professor of psychology and director of the Children's Digital Media Center, Los Angeles.
"Studies show that reading develops imagination, induction, reflection and critical thinking , as well as vocabulary ," Greenfield said. "Reading for pleasure is the key to developing these skills. Students today have more visual literacy and less print literacy. Many students do not read for pleasure and have not for decades."
"Wiring classrooms for Internet access does not enhance learning," Greenfield said. “ Technology is not a panacea in education, because of the skills that are being lost. “
What now?
"No one medium is good for everything," Greenfield said. "If we want to develop a variety of skills, we need a balanced media diet . Each medium has costs and benefits in terms of what skills each develops."
Schools should make more effort to test students using visual media , she said, by asking them to prepare PowerPoint presentations , for example. "As students spend more time with visual media and less time with print, evaluation methods that include visual media will give a better picture of what they actually know," said Greenfield, who has been using films in her classes since the 1970s.
Greenfield believes much of this change is related to our increased use of technology , as well as other factors, including increased levels of formal education, improved nutrition, smaller families and increased societal complexity . http://www.scienceblog.com/cms/technology-producing-decline-critical-thinking-and-analysis-18362.html

Teaching with Twitter?

Like text messaging & instant messaging 140 characters at a time Status updates, conversations, breaking news Usernames: @__________ Ex. @eulerfranca What is Twitter?
A book/article you’re reading. Research you’re doing. A conference you’re going to. Find others interesting in similar topics/research areas. Continue conversations inside and outside of class. Promote more productive classroom conversations. Ask live questions to Twitter followers. What should I Tweet?
So Twitter and other micro-blogging tools: great to create a spark – a desire to learn; great to find current thinking – and to start the journey of learning in a given area; excellent for specific information and knowledge acquisition; excellent as a refresher to existing learning; excellent for learning from peers and their experiences. http://rapidbi.com/management/twitter-as-a-learning-aid-beyond-university/

Professional Development    "PD is more important than having the latest technology - teachers have to be trained and encouraged to use what they have. Teachers have to want to make the change." Maggie Hos-McGrane Blog Classroom 2.0
Enhancing Lessons   "The most important lesson I learned is that technology should never be used for the sake of technology. It MUST improve or enhance a lesson. Whether you are podcasting, blogging, or building a website with your students, make sure that the technology tool makes your lesson better." http://friedman-techtalk.blogspot.com /
Teachers Matter "The greatest tools in educational technology can never replace a great teacher."    http://timjleister.edublogs.org/ "Technology can not replace good teaching.  Tech can help you become a better teacher, more effective - but it can't make a bad teacher into a good one.  Or fix a bad lesson."    http://teachj.wordpress.com /
