BUSKING
If you want to hear free music in London you should go underground, for it is in the subway that
across under London’s street and link them to the underground railway station that many “buskers”
or street musicians prefer to play. Most buskers are young people looking for an alternative to
regular work. Some of them are dedicated musicians who see “bucking” as mean as playing their
music without interference. Some are students; others are artists or craftsmen who play at the
weekends. A strict code of conduct exists: every busker has a fair chance of getting a good
audience.
Buskers are also concerned about the standard of their music. It has to simple but well played.
Simplicity is important because the audience consists of passers-by who rarely have time to stop
and listen. Of course, the buskers don’t play for free. Picking can vary from day to day and every
busker dreams of the day when a rich music lover will pass by and drop a ten pounds note in his
hat!
Busking without a license is illegal in Britain. However, most buskers have found that the police
turn a blind eye to busking. Perhaps they, like many others, enjoy the music in the underground.
