The 1975 analysis completed
In terms of Mise-en-scene, the front cover is designed in a greyscale with black and white contrasting each other, however the
prominence of the black suggests what they’re music is like and how it covers some dark themes like falling out of love and
childhood upset. Furthermore, the use of the light pipes around the board gives a shining effect, which draws attention to the band
name this is because it is only their debut album so it suggests they are breaking through the darkness (the music scene) and
starting to be recognised. The dark colours also represent their indie rock genre.
The logo of their band is positioned in the middle of the cover to make their album recognisable to fans. In addition, the band have
cleverly named their debut after themselves making it easier for the audience to remember them because they will not get
confused between the bands name and the name of the album.
Through the lack of imagery of the band themselves on the album cover, it represents the bands feelings. They often tell audiences
to judge them based upon their music and not their image this is why they have chosen artwork and sophistication for their album
cover rather than pictures of themselves because as their debut album they want audiences to buy it because of the music and
what the band represent rather than what they look like.
Also the simplicity of the design reflects the bands music, because they write songs with hidden concepts and meanings which the
audience must interpret therefore by choosing a simple CD cover design allowing audiences to interpret it how they want, it
introduces them to the style of their music.
The name ‘1975’ is very unique. The album has connotations of the 1970s as well through the lighting it could be compared to a vintage 1970s light board at cinema’s and theatres. The use
of the lights gives an authentic and realistic effect, this is a key convention of the Indie genre who unlike pop don’t glam things up with certain shots and effects. The lights and lit up “1975”
make the band seem mysterious creating curiosity among the audience will encourage them to buy the album. Also the lights suggest that something dark is going on which is a consistent
theme throughout their music because they cover many deep issues through their lyrics. In addition Lighting gives the effect of a spotlight on a stage this suggests they are great live and play
their own instruments, because another key element to the Indie genre is that they play live often unlike pop singers which do tours every now and again, this is why in music videos indie
bands include a lot of live footage.
The album cover gives a sense of realism through the wire from the lights appearing on the front cover, This is done to represent the realism of the band; how they write their own songs and
play their own instruments. A theme of realism and no gimmicks is often found among indie bands.
As well, on the front cover their appears to be a floor marked with footprints this resembles how the band play live often, doing little gigs around the country as well as the huge tours.
Through appealing the live element it is a key theme in the indie genre for bands to play live in their music videos and the 1975 do this too.
Through the use of the consistent and simple design of the black and white contrasting colour scheme, it shows how the band are consistent with in their songs
and how they all have a familiar sound.
The font is a simple white sans serif font meaning it is easy to read allowing audiences to read the song titles before purchasing the album. However due to the
glow put on the font, it makes it unique to the “1975” suggesting how the “1975” have a unique and individual sound. The font used on the back is more modern
than the vintage font used on the front, this could show how the band has some vintage and modern influences on their music style.
Another common convention used on the back cover, is the barcode allowing the audience to buy the CD. Also there is other information including copyrights
and the record label.
The design of the back cover is parallel to the front cover. The only
thing to have changed is that the light box now contains the titles of
the songs included in the album and there is a reflection. This is a
convention found on most CD’s because it makes it easier for the
audience to find songs they want to listen to. Also it allows potential
fans to decide if they like the sound of the band before purchasing the
CD because a lot can be inferred about the music of the band through
the titles of the songs.
The design including the reflection is clever and effective because it
represents how this is their debut album so the songs on the album
reflect the bands personality, feelings and personal experiences or
how their music reflects something else.
The CD uses the same font for the title of the band as the album cover, this keeps
the bands identity consistent.
The design of the CD is minimalist, this is unconventional because CD’s often have
lots of text and images on. The band have purposely done this to stay consistent
with their theme of mystery creating a stylish and sophisticated image for the
band.
The CD’s design is still monotropic with the CD’s main colour being a dark grey
and the title being black. This allows the band to keep a consistent colour scheme
and it allows the name to stand out on the CD. In addition, the CD is cleverly
designed with a white inner part making the CD look like a record. This is done to
continue the vintage theme brought through the font of the title. Also vinyl’s are a
common theme among indie fans which is why many indie bands now also
release vinyl records as well as normal CD’s. Another interpretation of the design
of the CD is that it represents the bands style and how they are classic and not
like conventional pop which would be found in the charts, it instead offers a
deeper meaning and a more powerful approach to music.
