The American Civil War was fought between 1861 to 1865 and was caused by several factors related to states' rights and the issue of slavery. The election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 increased tensions between northern and southern states over the issues of slavery and states' rights. This led several southern states to secede from the Union and form the Confederate States of America. The Civil War resulted in over 618,000 deaths and ended with the defeat of the Confederacy and abolition of slavery through the 13th Amendment. Reconstruction followed the war as the country rebuilt and sought to integrate freed slaves through new constitutional amendments.
