13 Now on the day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in
their oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were
plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15 and the Sabeans attacked and
took them. They also slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have
escaped to tell you.” 16 While he was still speaking, another also came and said,
“The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and
consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 17 While he was still
speaking, another also came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three bands and
made a raid on the camels and took them and slew the servants with the edge of the
sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 18 While he was still speaking, another
also came and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in
their oldest brother’s house, 19 and behold, a great wind came from across the
wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people
and they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

21 He said,

The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away.

made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and
comfort him. 12 When they lifted up their eyes at a distance and did
not recognize him, they raised their voices and wept. And each of them
tore his robe and they threw dust over their heads toward the sky.

adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking
someone to devour. 9 But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the
same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your
brethren who are in the world. 10 After you have suffered for a little

David’s two wives had been taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess

10 As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would
come to you made careful searches and inquiries, 11 seeking to know what
person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted
the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. 12 It was revealed to them
that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now
have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you
by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look. 13
Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope
completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus
Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts
which were yours in your ignorance, 15 but like the Holy One who called you,
be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16 because it is written, “YOU
SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”

while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to
Him who judges righteously; 24 and He Himself bore our sins in His

righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. 25 For you were

  • #6 Of all the characters in the Bible with whom we associate challenge of suffering, Job stands out. Job (patriarch) had 7k sheep, 3k camels, 5k oxen and 500 donkeys, numerous servants, 7 sons and 3 daughters and lost them all in one day. Then his health failed and he had sores from head to the sole of his foot. He lost the support of his wife. Worst of all was his “friends” who came to console stayed to accuse. The book of Job is not about suffering as much as faith in spite of suffering.

  • #12 Sometimes, well-intentioned friends often become the greatest vexation of all when we suffer. In times of suffering, very little that is said will be remembered but the fact that you came and honestly shared in the suffering will be remembered. What is important is how you handle the suffering and your relationship with the Lord. It would have been better if Job's friends would have just returned ohm after 7 days of silence then to have remained and attempt to explain the reason for his suffering.
