Pope Urban II launched the First Crusade in 1095 to retake the Holy Lands from Muslim control. The Crusaders took Jerusalem in 1099, but later Crusades failed to hold the city. The Third Crusade (1189-1192) saw Saladin defeat the Christian armies but allow pilgrims to visit Jerusalem. While the Crusades had mixed impacts, they increased trade and learning but also led to corruption in the Catholic Church.
