The Crusades were a series of military expeditions launched by European Christians in the 11th through 13th centuries to recapture the Holy Land from Muslim rule. The Crusades began in 1095 when Pope Urban II preached the First Crusade in response to the increased persecution of Christians in Jerusalem. The First Crusade succeeded in capturing Jerusalem in 1099 and established the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. The Crusades had significant effects on Europe such as increasing cultural exposure and weakening feudalism by strengthening royal authority. Religious military orders also formed to defend the holy sites in the holy land.
