WHAT ARE THE CRUSADES?
• It is the war between Christians and
Muslims, and it was centered around the city
  of Jerusalem.
• The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in
  Jerusalem commemorated the hill of
crucifixion and the tomb of Christ's burial
  and was visited by Pilgrims.
• By 1605, Jerusalem was taken by the
  turks, therefore 3,000 Christians were
  killed.
THE CAUSE OF THE CRUSADES
• The city of Jerusalem held a holy
  significance to the Christian religion.
• Were great military expeditions
undertaken by the Christian nations of
Europe for the purpose of rescuing the holy
  places of Palestine.
• It started in 1906 when Pope Claremont
preached the First Crusade at the Council
  of Claremont.

  land from the Saracens.
• Also wanted to drive the Turks out of
  Anatolia.

terms and rescue the Byzantines from a
  threat.
THE FIRST CRUSADE
• Real Armies were gathering in the west.
• More recruiters came from France than any
  other country.
• Lasted from1095-1099
• Established a Latin kingdom of Jerusalem
• Provided more land for the crusade knights
who often traveled across Europe to find
  their fortunes.
EFFECTS OF THE CRUSADES
• The most significant effect of the Crusades
was that there was a vast increase in
  cultural horizons for many Europeans.
• IT was an act of piety, charity, and love.
• Helped break down feudalism by increasing
  the authority of the kings.
• Taught Europe how to build ships and use a
  compass.
ORDERS OF RELIGIOUS KNIGHTS

knights, working from monastic rule in
order to defend the holy land.
• They also provided this for the pilgrims en
  route to Jerusalem.
