This chapter analyzes the challenges facing the Eurozone and proposals to address them through improved economic governance. It first examines why significant imbalances built up in developed economies and among EMU countries from 2001 until the crisis in 2007 due to unsustainable growth. It then analyzes the magnitude of these imbalances and heterogeneity between EMU countries. Finally, it studies challenges in improving EMU fiscal, financial, and economic integration, which will determine its economic future.
