Editor's Notes

  • #3 Public human services have served as a safety net for families since FDR’s New Deal. Given the country’s economic climate, education has renewed focus and importance. As things do, public services and education will likely evolve over the next few years. Some of the anticipated changes to public human services and education are: Changes in funding sources for public human services The nature of the public human services to be offered Accountability in education Diversity in education Legislative influences in public assistance and education
  • #4 Funding of public and human services will possibly change over the next few years. The hope of many citizens and politicians is that the bulk of the funds allocated for human services would come from private donors and foundations versus tax dollars. It is unlikely that the government will be completely removed from human services funding but changes, such as performance-based government funding, will likely be a reality. Social financing, like a ‘Pay for Success’ option, is an alternative funding option for human services programs that pays providers when outcomes are met (Waering & Hendrick, 2013).
  • #5 Human services to be offered in the near future will likely remain TANF related services. TANF is government funded Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. TANF provides assistance to needy families so that children can be cared for in their own homes. It reduces the dependency of needy parents by promoting job preparation, work and marriage. TANF also prevents and reduces the incidence of out-of-wedlock pregnancies while encouraging the formation and maintenance of two-parent families (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2014). Legislators and politicians, however, have expressed interest in drastically reducing the amount of TANF dollars offered to families.
  • #6 According to Harsh and Mallory (2013) performance-based learning will have an enhanced focus in the near future. Learning Facilitators will be responsible for their students’ success and held accountable for poorly performing classes. An increased focus on building the learning capacity of students which bridges the gap between past, present, and future knowledge (Harsh & Mallory, 2013). An increased focus on electronic and distance learning will meet the needs of even more working adults.
  • #7 Diversity within education will continue to grow over the next several years. As the US census (2009) indicates, the Hispanic and Asian populations within the country will more than double by the year 2050. “Diversity in an organization trumps individual talent, allowing a group to solve complex problems in an innovative fashion” (Davis, p. 352, 2009). Universities that are less exclusive will likely thrive and see the development of a more diverse student body. Given the US’ economic outlook, universities and colleges will need to accommodate these new citizens in order to feed a knowledge-based job market.
  • #8 Just as HIPPA has influenced the way information is transmitted, legislation of human services will continue to play a significant role in which services are offered and how they are delivered (Giovanni, 2009). In education, increased liability and responsibility to ensure a higher quality of care will result in the hiring of RN’s with greater credentials in the near future.
  • #9 Public human services have served as a safety net for families since FDR’s New Deal. Given the country’s economic climate, education has renewed focus and importance. As things do, public services and education will likely evolve over the next few years.
