The hindbrain contains the medulla, pons, and cerebellum. The medulla controls vital reflexes like breathing and heart rate. The pons connects the left and right sides of the brain. The cerebellum is important for movement, balance, and coordination. The midbrain contains the superior and inferior colliculi, tectum, and substantia nigra. The superior and inferior colliculi are routes for sensory information. The substantia nigra contains dopamine pathways important for behaviors like eating and depression.
