plans for a third film on 30 July 2012, turning his adaptation of The Hobbit into
a trilogy. The third film in the trilogy was originally called ‘there and back again’
however they changed the name once it was decided to be a trilogy and it was
then changed to ‘the battle of the five armies’.

The film failed to earn $1 billion at the box office despite various critics
projecting it to reach that milestone. The Hollywood Reporter said that the
possibility of The Battle of the Five Armies grossing $1 billion worldwide was
extremely low due to "plunging exchange rates around the globe," that were
witnessed in that year and that Warner Bros. and MGM ultimately will take in
nearly $90 million less than they planned on receiving due to rising dollar and
plunging foreign currencies.
