Web & Smartphones Are Fun!
Web, and smartphone are considered the most famous, widely-used technologies in
today’s world.
Ben Parr said: “Google has placed its faith in data, while Apple worships the power of design. This
dichotomy made the two companies complementary. Apple would ship the phones and
computers, while Google would provide Maps, Search, YouTube, and other web tools that
made the devices more useful”
Here are some interesting facts about them:
• The first emoticon is credited to Kevin Mackenzie in 1979, it was simple -) and didn’t really
look like a face. 3 years later, :-) was proposed by Scott Fahlman and has become the norm.
• Google estimates that today’s Internet contains about 5 million terabytes of data, and claims
it has only indexed a paltry 0.04% of it all!
• The first smartphone “Simon” was introduced by IBM in 1992. And was sold by $1099 (413
BD).
• The average smartphone user checks their phone 110 times a day!
Introduction
My research talks about, and discusses:
• An Exposure to Smartphones: Their definition, overview,
emergence, and evolution
• Web Decline: Reasons of failure, in-depth comparison
between web and smartphones
• Establishment of Smartphones: Why smartphone is the best
successor? Users and market interaction with it
• What is after smartphones?
The Purpose of Research
The main “goal” of my research is to: Comprehensively study, and investigate
the actual reasons that replaced the web with the smartphone
technology, and to prove why smartphones are better than web.
This goal is divided into small three objectives, as the following:
1. Finding the reasons that led to web decline, and consequently
smartphone emergence: Evaluating their practicality, and assessing their
effectiveness.
2. To neutrally and objectively compare between web and smartphones.
3. To support the preference of smartphones over web with real-life
evidences.
Research Outline
My research consists of:
Chapter 1: Smartphones Evolution and Emergence
• 1.1: What is smartphones? Definition, Brief Overview
• 1.2: Smartphones Emergence
• 1.3: Smartphone Evolution
Chapter 2: Web Decline
• 2.1: Reasons of Web Decline
• 2.2: Comparison: Web Versus. Smartphones
Chapter 3: The Establishment of Smartphone Technology Era
• 3.1: Post Web: Why smartphone is the best alternative to web?
• 3.2: The Beginning of Smartphones Dominance, User Interaction
• 3.3: Market Interaction, Smartphone-based World
• 3.4: The Next Future Leap: What is after smartphones?
Findings
• The web decline is a result of several reasons: 1- Social Media &
Messaging Applications, 2- Lack of Features Compared to Smartphones, 3-
People Conception of Technology
• The web didn’t decline in sudden. It declined gradually until smartphone
use parallelized it, and surpassed it.
• Among many technologies, smartphone technology was the best
successor to web.
• Learned lessons from smartphone emergence and web decline: The
winning technology is the one that solves our problems, and provides our
needs innovatively, and reasonably.
Conclusion
• Smartphones are engineered, at core, better than web. And they solved
the biggest issue that users were suffering from: The portability & access.
• Smartphone emergence hardly impacted the web, and its improvements
(evolution) made it the best alternative and successor to web.
• The web didn’t satisfy the increasing needs of users. As a consequence, it
was destined to decline and fail.
• Users are the judge. The technology/product that is going to solve their
problems reliably and reasonably is the one that will succeed.
