poor. She thought that she has nothing to wear.
No gown nor fine jewelries.
5
 So she borrow a diamond necklace from his friend
Madame Forestier .
 She enjoyed the party very much with a lots of fancy
feast and young rich men.
 At home, She felt her neck and realize she lost her
borrowed necklace .
 Mathilde Loisel went back to street to look for the
necklace but they can not find the necklace.
 So Mathilde Loisel and her husband went to A
jewelry store and they found A exactly same

6
7

thousand francs.
 They had half of the money so they buy the

gave back the necklace to her friend.
 They took 10 years to pay back the debts.
Characters
 The main character of the story is Mathilde Loisel . She
was born by a lot of destiny from a family of employees.
Mathilde has been blessed with physical beauty but she
feels deeply discontented with her lot in life. When she
prepares to attend A fancy party, she borrows a diamond
necklace from her friend Madame Forestier, then loses
the necklace and must work for ten years to pay off a
replacement. Her one night of radiance cost her and
Monsieur Loisel any chance for future happiness.
8
Mathilde Loisel
Monsieur Loisel
 Monsieur Loisel: Mathilde's husband. Monsieur
Loisel is content with the small pleasures of his
life but does his best to appease Mathilde’s
demands and assuage her complaints. He loves
Mathilde immensely but does not truly understand
her, and he seems to underestimate the depth of
her unhappiness .When Mathilde loses the
necklace, monsieur Loisel sacrifices his own
future to help her repay the debt. He pays dearly
for something he had never wanted in the first
necklace.
9
Madame forestier
10
 Mathilde's wealthy friend. Madame forestier treats
mathilde kindly, but mathilde is bitterly jealous of
madame forestier’s wealth, and the kindness pains her.
Madame forestier lends mathilde the necklace for the
party and does not inspect it when mathilde returns it.
She is horrified to realize that mathilde has wasted her
life trying to pay for A replacement necklace, when
the original necklace had actually been worth nothing.
Theme of The Story
 In our opinion, the theme that the author wanted
to convey is:
 Honesty and importance of telling the truth.
 Happy and thankful what you have. If you want
more then work harder to achieve it.
 People may pay a terrible price for greed.
11
Background of The Story
 "The necklace," the titular short story, was extremely
popular, featuring Maupassant's signature twist ending.
The story was published in 1884 and was later
included in Maupassant's short-story collection in
1885 ("tales of day and night"). The influence of
Flaubert, celebrated author and Maupassant's friend, is
clear in this story: both "the necklace" and the works
of Flaubert feature female characters who are
dissatisfied with their lives and are desperate to escape
them.
