THE ROMANCE OF STEEL - R. M. LALA PRESENTED BY- KUMAR RAMA SHANKAR BIMHRD (PGDM-B)
Introduction: The Romance of TATA STEEL is a fitting tribute to an “exceptional Indian company” in its centenary.. This book is dedicated to the pioneer’s of India’s modern steel industry.. This book is dedicated to Jamshetji N. Tata, who envisioned the steel plant as a fountainhead of India’s industrial regeneration..
The Romance of TATA STEEL: Its romance lies in its birth – the vision of a man.. The romance lies in dedication.. The romance lies in the principles.. Working on the principles that “ Nothing is worth attempting that will not benefit the nation..”
Part 1: A Dream and a Creation Man of Destiny. The Ring of Metal. Hidden Wealth Emerges & the Discovery of Sakchi. Creating a CITY.
Man of Destiny: P.N. Bose, the meticulous geologist who discovered iron ore in the Chanda & Durg districts(1880) and subsequently led the Tatas to Mayurbhanj.. In 1882, Jamshetji seriously thought of setting up a steel plant.. In 1900, Jamshetji went to England to meet The Secretary of India, Lord George Hamilton..
In 1902, he sailed for England & USA to study the latest developments in steel technology.. He met Charles Page Perin who helped Jamshetji realize his dream of India’s 1 st steel plant.. On 19 th May 1904, Jamshetji passed away in Germany but work continued keeping his memory and legacy alive..
Hidden Wealth Emerges & the Discovery of Sakchi: Tatas issued their prospectus in 1907.. A total of Rs. 2.32 crore had been raised.. In December 1907, Weld and Srinivas Rao discovered iron ore mines near village Sakchi- later to be called Jamshedpur.. On 27 th February 1908 the first stake was driven into the forest covered plateau.. The 1 st blast furnace was blown on 2 nd December 1911 & the first ignot of steel on 16 th February 1912..

Greater Extension Program envisaged raising the capacity of the plant by 5 times.. Faced severe financial crisis in 1920s.. In 1939, Tata Steel was the largest integrated steel plant in the British Empire..
Union Stands Up for MANAGEMENT: Personnel Department of TISCO was established in 1947.. TISCO created many ‘firsts’ in India’s labour history.. Like 8 hour working day, free medical aid, establishment of welfare department, schooling facilities for children and list goes on……….
In 1978, two cabinet ministers in Janata govt. made a bid to nationalize Tata Steel.. Tata Workers Union Executive Committee protested against this bid strongly.. At last the union took the wind out of the sails of the nationalization lobby..
Part 3: The Spirit of Adventure Men of STEEL. Growing Younger. Precious Minerals, More Precious Men. Vignettes.
Men of STEEL: Jamshetji Tata – the visionary who laid down the guidelines for TISCO.. Charles P. Perin and C.M. Weld who worked day-night on ground.. Sir Dorabji Tata who followed his father’s inestimable legacy of service to the country.. R.D. Tata who conducted Tata Steel day after day.. Burjorji Padshah- the executive director..
J.R.D. Tata took over as chairman of the Tata group in 1938 .. Ratan N. Tata took over as chairman of the group in 1991.. The unknown HINDU(1920)-” MEN OF STEEL..
Growing Younger: In 1930s , Tatas had developed TISCROM Steel for Howrah in Bridge.. At same time they developed TISCOR for safe welding in structural steel.. During 2 nd World War, in the course of 5 years Tata Steel managed to produce 110 varieties of steel with hardly any worthwhile facilities.. The Tatanagar, a light armoured vehicle manufactured by TISCO was used in this war..
After independence, the Jamshedpur Technical Institute provided a pool of 13000 technicians.. Tata Steel launched a MEP in 1954.. Again a MEP is launched in 1980 with a loan of US $ 38 million from the IFC.. In 1981 its raw steel production was 2 million tonnes..

The Struggle For Survival: In 1992, Dr. J.J. Irani was appointed as managing director of Tata Steel.. On the flight to Jamshedpur, he wrote on a pad: “ What I, as CEO, must do”.. 1. Develop a personal vision- what do I want to accomplish in life.. 2. Tell the truth about current reality.. 3. Do the tough things no one else wants to do..

A New Dawn : In 2001, World Steel Dynamics (WSD) selected the TATA STEEL as world’s No. 1 steel company based on certain criteria and various factors.. The journal singled out TATA STEEL as a world class steel-maker because of the following factors.. Spirit.. Reserves of coal and iron ore of its own..
Very low operating cost by global standards.. High profits (cash flow of $ 50-100 million).. The generation of record profits in the year ended March 2001.. Dedicated management and workers. Tata has never had a strike in last 65 years.. A new cold-rolling and galvanizing complex that has the potential to add substantially to operating profits..
Part 6: Going GLOBAL Planning for the FUTURE. Part of the Indian Landscape.
Planning for the FUTURE: Securing the base.. Reaching out.. * Company won the bid to purchase the Anglo-Dutch steel giant CORUS.. * TATA’s set up a plant for the refine of ferro chrome at Richard’s Bay (South Africa).. * Tata steel acquired NatSteel in Singapore and Millennium steel in Thailand..
Part of the Indian Landscape: The establishment of TISCO unleashed the latent industrial energies of the Indian people.. TISCO enabled other industries to start.. Tata steel has created not just steel for a nation. It has created within itself around it, a climate of FREEDOM..
