The Sami people are the indigenous people of northern Scandinavia and the Kola Peninsula. Their traditional homeland, called Sapmi, spans parts of northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. In the late 19th and 20th centuries, the Sami faced pressures to assimilate with the dominant Nordic cultures. However, since the 1970s, the Sami have experienced a cultural revitalization, with a renewed focus on their traditional practices and greater political activism to protect their rights and culture.
