The Speech Proc
• A sound oral communication
program starts with the
understanding of the foundations of
the oral communication process.
The Four
Components of
the Speech
Process
-SLMO-
Speaker
the initiator of
the
communication
process. He
desires to share
information and
elicit a specific
response from
the listener.
Listener
the recipient
of the
information
and provides
the response
to the shared
message.
Could be active
or passive
listener
Could be an
intended or
unintended
listener
An unintended
listener provides
an unsolicited
response.
Message
the body of
information
transferred from
the speaker to the
listener. This can
also be the
response of the
listener.
Occasion
the totality of the
setting, time,
ambience and
structure where
the message is
shared by at least
two people.
• Success in communication is also a
shared responsibility between the
speaker and the listener.

Types of Oral
Communication
IPGM
Interpersonal
communication between two persons, like
in a conversation, a telephone call or an
interview.
Public
communication from one person to many
people, like in a candidate’s campaign,
lawyer convincing the jury, or manager
talking to the sales force.
Group
communication among members of a
group, like in a committee deliberation,
brainstorming sessions, or panel discussion.
Mass communication
done through a channel like radio, TV, or the Internet
where one immediately shares information with a wide
spectrum of people at one given time. Newscasting and
public speaking with TV coverage are common examples.
The Tools of Oral
Communication
Verbal symbols words used
in speech. The totality of
these words is known as
language.
To use verbal symbols, one
must know the grammar and
vocabulary of a language.
It is also necessary to
understand the cultural
context of words.
Non-verbal symbols
tools that do not use words to carry out
a message.
Kinds of Non-Verbal
Symbols
BODY LANGUAGE
An erect posture
signifies
confidence, dignity
and regality
Movement from
place to place
communicate grace
and self- confidence
Gestures help
clarify by describing
and emphasizing
Facial
expressions
communicate
emotions
Eye contact
communicates
sincerity or
lack of it

• Cool colors stimulate
routine behavior
