• Deliberate misinformation spread via media (print, web) with the intent to gain
financially or politically.
• The Columbia Journalism Review identified 6 types of fake news
used in the last election:
1. Authentic material used in the wrong context
2. Imposter news sites designed to look like sites we already know
3. Fake news sites
4. Fake information
5. Manipulated content
6. Parody content
Prepare for battle
• Libraries are a trusted source:
o According to Pew, 74% ofAmericans
say libraries help them decide what
information they can trust
• Build our community’s information literacy
o Programs on fake news & fact-checking
o Informational packets
o Librarian-authored blog posts
• Remember the truth is nonpartisan
• Goal is to instill critical thinking
