This document is a thesis submitted by Ai Zhang to the University of Wollongong for a Bachelor of Engineering degree. The thesis investigates using thermal imaging to recognize human emotions from facial expressions. Zhang reviews previous research on visible light and infrared-based emotion recognition. Methods examined include feature extraction using PCA, segmentation, and classifying expressions with SVM or neural networks. Zhang proposes a new method using 2D wavelet transforms to extract features from thermal images and classify expressions with k-nearest neighbors. The algorithm is tested on a facial expression database and shows potential for infrared emotion recognition.
