The study examined whether administering prophylactic intravenous antibiotics before surgery would affect the results of intraoperative cultures obtained during revision total knee arthroplasty for infected knees. The study found that preoperative prophylactic antibiotics did not affect intraoperative culture results. Therefore, prophylactic antibiotics should not be withheld prior to surgery for an infected TKA when the infecting organism is known and there has been no recent antibiotic therapy within 4 weeks.
