Scaling up sustainable production solutions:
Impact of Voluntary Sustainability Standards on
small-scale aquatic foods producers in least
developed countries

IS SUSTAINABLE AQUATIC FOOD
PRODUCTION POSSIBLE?
With all due respect, there is a need for aquatic sustainability.
Fish stocks can recover and replenish.
By taking care of our fish stock, they will take care of us.
If aquaculture is produced in a sustainable manner (social,
environmental and economical), it can contribute to long-term food
security and nutrition, healthy ecosystems and improve the living
standards for all, especially the poorest.
Can Voluntary Sustainability standards help to achieve
Sustainable Food production?
What are Voluntary
Sustainability Standards?
u Requirements set by private entities that
producers are asked to meet for economic,
social and environmental sustainability metrics.
u By complying with VSS, the products carry a
“seal-of-approval” eco-label or a sustainability
claim.
u VSS can also include other metrics as: human
rights, equitable profit sharing, decent working
conditions, conservation of natural resource,
biodiversity, and ecosystem.
u VSS market is rapidly growing. Consumers are
willing to pay premium to VSS-labelled
products.
u VSS are developed for land crops. Price Premium
can lead to over-production, which is a problem
in aquatic food production.

CONNECTING AN INDUSTRY TO CREATE SUSTAINABLE AQUAFEEDS
HATCH IS PARTNERING UP WITH GLOBAL LEADING AQUACULTURE INDUSTRY PARTNERS TO FIND NOVEL FEED
INNOVATIONS TO HELP THE AQUACULTURE INDUSTRY DEVELOP MORE SUSTAINABLE AQUAFEEDS.
CHALLENGE
Global aquaculture accounts for a modest amount of greenhouse gas emissions compared to
terrestrial livestock farming but one way it could reduce its footprint further is by looking at the
biggest source: feed production.
SOLUTION
Increasing use of novel ingredients from previously untapped and sustainable nutrient
resources like micro-algae, insect meal and alternative proteins.
OUR APPROACH
Working across the feed value chain with novel feed ingredient suppliers, feed producers and
producers to scale new sustainable aquafeeds. Together with Cargill we are supporting the
development of novel aquafeeds, testing and validating new feed concepts that will lower the carbon
footprint impact from feed substantially.

CLOSING THE GENDER GAP IN OCEAN FOOD SYSTEMS
WOMEN PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND IN FOOD SECURITY; THEY ARE THE BACKBONE
OF THE RURAL ECONOMY, ESPECIALLY IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD.
Hatch has taken action to empower gender equality in ocean food society, an essential means of
achieving the sustainable development goals of sustainable rural development, food security and
nutrition. Hatch`s objective is to achieve equality between women and men in access to finance,
resources and business support to promote sustainable aquatic food production, increase food
security and rural development
Our first global Women in Aquaculture business program will be kicking off in August 2021 and
offer:
• Industry network
• Access to finance
• Business support
• Mentorship support with women business leaders in the aquaculture industry
