The Tridentine Period lasted from 1545 to 1963, beginning with the Council of Trent and ending with the Second Vatican Council. During this time, advances in science led many away from religion through rationalism. Major events impacted the Catholic Church, including revolutions in America, France, and other parts of Europe, which sometimes led to persecution of Catholics. In response, the Church focused on spirituality. The First and Second Vatican Councils addressed the role of the Church in a changing world.
