   Business Partners with the capability to perform customer benchmarks on the latest
   System x and Blade Servers technology.
   Our center provides access to equipment, facilities, consulting services, and project
   management skills. We help customers make the right decision on System x platforms.
   Our center supports requests from around the world with a focus on customers in Europe.



   A set of experts: I/T Specialists, Advisory IT/Specialist, Red-Hat certified
   (RHCE) and Microsoft OS experts, Servers and Storage specialists, we provide:

   February 2012 : POWER Benchmark in Montpellier (Business
   context)


   X is one of the market leaders in the European insurance industry.
   The objective of the benchmark was to validate this growth capability of the
   DWH/DSS solution


   Customer main infrastructure:
       Mainframe:     IBM servers & IBM DS8K storage
       UNIX:          IBM POWER servers & HDS USP-V

   DatawareHouse / DSS infrastructure running on UNIX platform:
       Server:      2 x POWER 795 in turbo mode (20 CORES / 650GB)
       Storage:     2 x HDS USP-V (LVM mirror) with 33 TB each, throughput 5 GB/sec

          Software: Informix XPS 8.51

   February 2012 : POWER Benchmark in Montpellier (Overall
   benchmark objectives)

   Goal of this benchmark is to validate solution scalability for a 330% volume growth
   within the next 3 years.

          Demonstrate scalability of the POWER 795 technology
          Demonstrate performance of the DS8800 storage system
          Informix best practices

   X had pre-defined and selected the following use cases
       Batch processes (SQL stream) with related SLA
       I/O workload measurement on DS8800

   The project requires
       Hardware and software stack using latest technologies
       Relevant dataset
       Representative workload generation

                                                                             1)   One rootvg-Disk with AIX 6.1 in the beginning.
                                                  AIX 6.1 TL7 - XPS 8.51          After the Installation of Informix another rootvg-
                                                                                  Disk with an Alternate Disk Migration to AIX 7.1
                                                 AIX 7.1 TL1 – XPS 8.51 1)
                                                                             2)   We want to use 16 FC adapters with 1 of the two
                                                                                  ports connected to the SAN. The adapters should
                                                                                  be distributed over the 3 I/O-drawers (in Double
                                                                                  Barrel mode) for maximum performance.

   February 2012 : POWER Benchmark in Montpellier (performance
   tips)

   Benchmark team applied AIX good practices to optimize POWER ressources :


   RSET gain approximatly 40% :

           Details taken from our benchmark :
           In our case, the optimal number of IFX CoServers was 9. To fit with the HW design, we have
           chosen to run with 8 CoServers (2 CoServers per Book)
           Book0 => CoServer1 and CoServer5
           Book1 => CoServer2 and CoServer6
           Book2 => CoServer3 and CoServer7
           Book3 => CoServer4 and CoServer8

           So, in AIX, 8 RSETs (one for each CoServer) were created with the following command :
           mkrset -c <set of cpu> [ -m <memory> ] rsetname
           mkrset -c 0-43 -m 0 COS/1
           mkrset -c 44-91 -m 0 COS/2

   Infrastructure, Informix & costing
      Install a server based on Linux (Fedora 14, kernel 2.6.35.14 x86_64) with the following
   specifications:

                   1-socket Intel quad-core Q9400 (four 2.66 Ghz processors)
                   16 Gb of DDR-2 RAM
                   Four 500 Gb SATA II, 7,200 rpm disk drives
                   Note that this configuration costs less than EUR900.


       Informix Dynamic Server 11.70.FC4

                   Innovator-C Edition
                   Note that this configuration costs ZERO EUR0.

   Informix database / setting used during this TPC-C benchmark :
          Shared memory sized to 2 GB*,

          Nine tables with index & contraints,

          No transaction’s application code modification allowed.


                 Results of the best run :
                 tpmC-UVA = 610.728

                 Number of warehouses:55
                 Number of terminals per warehouse: 10
                 Warm-up time : 45 mn
                 Measure time : 240 mn

   Conclusion : « This test successfully achieved the 55 warehouses for
   10 terminals run, making a total of 550 terminal sessions, which is
   impressive for a test hosting both application and the database server
   on the same client ».
