According to the
Philippine Atmospheric,
Geophysical and
Astronomical Services
Administration (PAGASA)
about 20 tropical
cyclones enter the
Philippine Area of
Responsibility (PAR)
each year.
We have to be
knowledgeable about
tropical cyclones if we
want to prevent the
loss of more lives.

During typhoon we expect:
☼ Lot of rain; and
☼ strong winds that move
in a certain direction
around an area.
The term typhoon is used
only in the northwestern
part of the Pacific
Ocean. Other part of the
Pacific Ocean the
equivalent term is
hurricane.

֍ The word
TYPHOON comes
from the word
“Tai Feng”
means “great or
big wind”.
֍ Hurricane comes
from the word
“Huracan” which
means “Storm”.

In the Philippines,
we used the same
word for all
categories of
tropical cyclones.
We call it “bagyo”
whether it is a
tropical depression,
a tropical storm or
a typhoon.

Parts of typhoon
֍ EYE – this is the center.
- it is the calm part of the storm.
֍ EYE WALL – this part is around the eye.
- this part has the strongest winds and
rains. The winds may blow 200 miles
per hour.
֍ RAIN BANDS – these are the clouds that spins which
brings the so much water and strong winds.

☺ A typhoon forms when winds
blow into areas of the
ocean where the water is
warm.
☺ These winds collect
moisture and rise, while
colder air moves in below.
☺ This creates pressure,
which causes the winds to
move very quickly.

Oceans and seas have great
influence on the weather of
continental masses. These
water evaporated from the
sea/ocean is carried up
into the atmosphere and
condenses, forming clouds
from which all forms of
precipitation result.
Sometimes, intense cyclonic
circulations occur which is
what we call the tropical
cyclones.

How typhoons formed
As warm, moist air
rises into the
atmosphere, it cools,
water vapor
condenses, and the
clouds form. As more
air rises, it creates an
area of low pressure
over the ocean.
As air continues to
rise, a tropical
depression forms. The
air accumulates large
amounts of sensible
and latent heat as it
spirals towards the
center.
Air continues to rise,
rotating
counterclockwise.
It receives the heat
from the sea and the
exchange can occur
rapidly, because of the
large amount of spray
thrown into the air by
the wind. The storm
builds to a tropical
storm with winds in
excess of 64 km/h. it
produces strong
thunderstorms.
When rapid exchange
of heat and warm air
continues to rise and
the wind exceeds
119km/h, the storm
becomes a
hurricane/typhoon.

Tropical cyclones can only form
over oceans of the world except
in the South Atlantic Ocean and
the south eastern Pacific where a
tropical cyclone could never be
formed due to the cooler sea
surface temperature and higher
vertical wind shears.
They develop at latitudes usually
greater than 5° from the equator.
They reach their greatest
intensity while located over warm
tropical water.

Typhoons gain power as
they move over warm bodies
of water, and start losing
energy once they move on to
land. Interaction with
land will weaken a typhoon.

Why does Philippines prone to
typhoons?
The Philippines is prone
to tropical cyclones due
to its geographical
location which generally
produce heavy rains and
flooding of large areas
and also strong winds
which result in heavy
casualties to human life
and destructions to
crops and properties.
Thus, it is of utmost
importance to have
sufficient knowledge on
such maritime phenomena
for beneficial purposes.

What are the safety measures
in time of typhoon?
1. Keep yourself updated.
2. Inspect your house for possible damages and necessary
repairs.
3. Clean your drainage and other water ways.
4. Store ample amount of ready-to-eat foods.
5. If you have elevated part of your house secure your
things that are generate electricity in there.
6. If you are advised to evacuate, do so. Do not be a
hard-headed.
7. Always have your emergency kits with you. Your emergency kit
may include first-aid supplies, candles, flashlights, life
vests and battery-operated radio.

1. If no advice to evacuate was announced, then better stay
inside your house. Keep yourself calm and postpone any
scheduled travels.
2. Keep on monitoring the typhoon’s movement
3. If you see signs of water rising, better turn off the
main source of electricity.
4. Do not wade along flooded areas to keep your self
contacting water-borne diseases.
5. If you are told to evacuate, calmly comply.

1. Monitor and update yourself with the progress of the
typhoon through radio, television or the internet.(if
should be accessible)
2. Wait for announcements regarding your area safety
before returning home.
3. Do not go sightseeing and give way to rescue teams.
4. Be extra careful in repairing your house.
5. Make sure there are no wet or submerged appliances or
outlets before turning electricity on.
6. Clean up. Dispose things that may be a ground for
mosquitos to breed.
