HOW THE FEATURES OF INFORMATION
TEXT SUPPORTS READING
COMPREHENSION
Illustrations and photos
 are powerful ways for students having
difficulty with text, to find and retain
information from textbooks and non-
fiction(reading comprehension)
Reference: Webster, Jerry (2018). Using Photographs and Illustrations to Support Reading Comprehension. Retrieved February 2,
2020, from https://www.thoughtco.com/photographs-and-illustrations-support-reading-comprehension-4058613.
HOW ILLUSTRATIONS HELP STUDENTS
 To understand what the author believes is important in the
text.
 To visualize the context of the non-fiction text (especially
history or geography) or content of the chapter/article, thus,
helping them "see" the important content.
 To learn text specific vocabulary.
Example: illustration of an insect or a plant accompanied
by captions or labels.
Reference: Webster, Jerry (2018). Using Photographs and Illustrations to Support Reading Comprehension. Retrieved February 2,
2020, from https://www.thoughtco.com/photographs-and-illustrations-support-reading-comprehension-4058613.
IMPROVING READING SPEED AND
COMPREHENSION
SQ3R
SQ3R
SQ3R :
• Scan/Survey
• Question
• Read
• Review
• Reread
SCAN THE TEXT - long term strategy
for developmental reading.
- Scanning basically
includes looking over the
text and identifying
important information.
SURVEY- Don’t read!
 Glance through the topic headings and try to get an
overview of the reading.
 To get a background knowledge, an initial orientation
that helps you organize the material as you read it.
 Skim the sections and read the final summary
paragraph to get an idea of where the chapter is going.
Reference: Kuther, Tara (2018). Improve Your Reading Speed and Comprehension With the SQ3R Method. Retrieved February 2, 2020, from
https://www.thoughtco.com/sq3r-reading-method-1685245.
SURVEY
 Look at the first heading in the chapter. Turn it
into a question.
 Create a series of questions to be answered in
your reading.
 This step leads to active reading, the best way to
retain written material.
Reference: Kuther, Tara (2018). Improve Your Reading Speed and Comprehension With the SQ3R Method. Retrieved February 2, 2020, from
https://www.thoughtco.com/sq3r-reading-method-1685245.
QUESTION
READ
 Read with purpose — use the questions as a guide.
 Read the first section of your reading assignment to
answer your question. Actively search for the
answers.
 If you finish the section and have not found an
answer to the question, reread it. Read reflectively.
Consider what the author is trying to say, and think
about how you can use that information.
Reference: Kuther, Tara (2018). Improve Your Reading Speed and Comprehension With the SQ3R Method. Retrieved February 2,
2020, from https://www.thoughtco.com/sq3r-reading-method-1685245.
RECITE
 After reading a section, try to recite the answer to
your question, using your own words and examples.
 If you can do this, it means that you understand the
material.
 If you cannot do this, glance over the section again.
 Once you have the answers to your questions, write
them down.
Reference: Kuther, Tara (2018). Improve Your Reading Speed and Comprehension With the SQ3R Method. Retrieved February 2,
2020, from https://www.thoughtco.com/sq3r-reading-method-1685245.
REVIEW
 After reading the entire assignment, test your
memory by reviewing your list of questions. Ask
each one and review your notes.
 You've created a set of notes that provide an
overview the chapter. You likely will not have to
reread the chapter again. If you've taken good notes,
you can use them to study for exams.
From: Kuther, Tara (2018). Improve Your Reading Speed and Comprehension With the SQ3R Method. Retrieved February 2,
2020, from https://www.thoughtco.com/sq3r-reading-method-1685245.
WHAT TO CONSIDER IN REVIEWING
NOTES
 consider how the material fits with what you know from the
course, experience, and other classes.
 What is the information's significance?
 What are the implications or applications of this material?
 What questions are you left with?
 Thinking about these bigger questions helps to place what
you've read within the context of the course and your
education — and is likely to lead to better
From: Kuther, Tara (2018). Improve Your Reading Speed and Comprehension With the SQ3R Method. Retrieved February 2,
