DAVID LACHAPELLE, the great American artist and photographer,
has made a return to Rome after more than 15 years to the Palazzo
delle Esposizioni with an exhaustive retrospective exhibition entitled
‘LaChapelle – After the Deluge’, curated by Gianni Mercurio. Nearly 100
works are on show, some being exhibited for the first time, including
several large-scale works. Baglioni Hotels celebrated LaChapelle’s
exceptional talent with a VIP reception at the Baglioni Hotel Regina.
The stunning Roman Penthouse, the most exclusive apartment in the
heart of of the city, was the setting for the event. Baglioni Hotel Regina
guests will also have the privilege of admiring seven works personally
selected by David LaChapelle, showcased in the hotel. In addition, a
special ‘Mila Cocktail’ has been created in honour of the artist and is
being served in the Brunello Lounge Restaurant.
The Baglioni Hotel Regina has created a special package around
the exhibition, including two nights in a suite or junior suite; daily buffet
breakfast; a welcome gift; two tickets for the exhibition and round-
trip transfers to Palazzo delle Esposizioni; a Mila Cocktail; and butler

handcrafted characters of refined shape,
conveying unusual and contemporary

A long-lasting artisanal procedure in
which silk gives shape to the characters
whilst serigraphy is carried out with
water colors manually lied on with a
spatula, each image is embroidered with
Swarovski® crystals one by one, elegantly
framed with fine wood, shaped and
painted by neapolitan craftsmen.
The complexity of the embroidery and the
careful attention for details are revealed
by a transparent glass back plate.

IT IS FOR GOOD REASON that celebrities, movie
stars, presidents and royals choose the Baglioni Suites
collection. Offering the most attentive but discreet
service and palatial surroundings in the heart of
many of Europe’s most stylish cities and resorts, each

Every suite is originally designed, with hand-crafted
fittings and the finest marbles, chandeliers and fabrics.
Because many of the hotels occupy magnificent historic
buildings, the décor of the suite reflects the period,
in keeping with the architecture. The Royal Suite at
Florence’s Relais Santa Croce, for example, comprises
two adjoining suites, one of which features coffered
ceilings adorned with delicate frescoes from original
18th century. The hotel retains its aura of a noble
residence, although today guests enjoy contemporary

The suite itself is exquisite, adorned with hand-made
wood panelling and Versailles parquet flooring,
the delicate furniture upholstered in rich French and
Venetian fabrics.
At the Baglioni Hotel Regina in Rome, the Roman
Penthouse is more than a suite; it’s a lavishly beautiful
apartment offering the very finest private living space

In medieval St-Paul de Vence, Hotel Le Saint Paul
blends seamlessly into the ancient stone of the Provençal
village. From the stylish comfort of the suites, there are
views over the rooftops to the rolling hills beyond. The
Terrasse Suite even has its own roof terrace, the perfect
spot for a romantic dinner. In the 18th century Villa
Gallici, meanwhile, the suites are furnished in traditional
Provençal style, with delicate florals and sumptuous
silks. Each suite has a private terrace or a scented garden,
bathed in the light by which Cézanne once painted and

Russia’s year for the last 150 years, at least. From San Remo to Cannes,
the Russians came for the mild winters, stayed for the wild summers, and
are still entranced by the languid lifestyle. By Lisa Gerard-Sharp

Sebbene Monaco celebri il 2015 come l’Anno della
Russia, in un certo senso la Riviera rende omaggio ai
suoi legami con il paese russo da almeno 150 anni.
Da San Remo a Cannes, i russi sceglievano la Riviera
per i suoi inverni miti e le sue estati sfrenate, e
subiscono ancora il fascino del suo languido stile di

I progetti dei russi sulla Riviera iniziarono molto
tempo fa. Già nel 1850, l’ammiraglio Popov tentò di
acquistare Monaco, ma fu respinto. I suoi connazionali

Nel 1864, appena inaugurata la ferrovia costiera,
l’imperatore Alessandro II e la sua consorte discesero
a Nizza. Il Carnevale divenne una festa russa, con
un’invasione di carrozze di nobildonne mascherate
da fiori tipici della Riviera come le rose e le viole.
L’indolente San Pietroburgo-Nizza-Cannes Express
recapitava i Russi bianchi a svernare sulle coste della
Riviera. E dopo che il granduca Michele stabilì che il suo
cuore avrebbe risentito di viaggi a velocità superiori a 30
miglia all’ora, gli orari dell’espresso vennero modificati
per accontentarlo. I russi erano decisamente arrivati.
La loro eredità è ancora visibile nelle esotiche cupole
tondeggianti di alcune chiese e nello sfarzo dei loro stili
di vita, come quello del principe Cherkassky, che nella
sua villa sopra Cannes imponeva ai suoi 48 giardinieri
di cambiare l’assetto dei fiori del suo parco ogni notte.
Il suo vicino, il conte Apraxim pretendeva invece che i
suoi violoncellisti “domestici” suonassero notte e giorno,
ma esigeva sempre un servitore dietro la sua poltrona,
poiché la musica vigorosa lo induceva a pensieri suicidi.
Alcuni addetti della polizia locale proteggevano i
granduchi e le granduchesse dal rischio di assassinio,
tanto che l’imperatrice Maria Feordorovna ricompensò le
forze dell’ordine regalando champagne e orologi d’oro.
THE RUSSIANS HAVE LONG HAD designs on the
Riviera. As early as the 1850s, Admiral Popov tried to
purchase Monaco but was rebuffed. The Russians had
more success with Villefranche, a port conveniently
close to Nice. The Riviera was a winter playground for
rich idlers and hypochondriacs, and the White Russians
led the way, or at least jostled the snooty British in the
sandpits and sanitaria.
In 1864, as soon as the Riviera railways opened,
Emperor Alexander II and his Empress descended on
Nice. Carnival became a Russian party, with carriages
of society ladies disguised as Riviera roses and violets.
The sluggish St Petersburg-Nice-Cannes Express
delivered wintering White Russians to the Riviera shores.
After Grand Duke Michael decided it would be bad for
his heart to travel at more than 30 miles an hour, the
train timetables were adapted accordingly. The Russians
had clearly arrived.
The Russian legacy lies in the exotic, onion-domed
churches and in the largesse of their lifestyles. In his
villa above Cannes, Prince Cherkassky expected his
48 gardeners to change the garden floral displays
nightly. His neighbour, Count Apraxim, required his pet
cellists to play night and day, but always with a servant
positioned behind his chair, as powerful music led him
to contemplate suicide.
Details of local police protected the Grand-Dukes
and Grand-Duchesses from assassination. Empress Maria
Feodorovna rewarded the local police force with gifts of
Champagne and gold watches.

dal 1856 Nizza divenne un porto sicuro per la Russia.

With its naval base in neighbouring Villefranche in
1856, Russia also considered Nice a favourite haven.
After Nice became French in 1860, Cimiez became a
retreat for Russian aristocrats and intellectuals. It was
a cradle-to-the-grave experience, with Russian
bathhouses and barbers, churches and cemeteries, as
well as grandiose mansions and dedicated libraries
in Russian districts. From writers as revolutionary as
Chekhov to real revolutionaries such as Lenin, later
Russians considered Nice home to freethinkers and
émigrés. Russian architects graced the Promenade des
Anglais with Art Deco facades while Diaghilev and
his troupe danced with gay abandon in Monte Carlo.
In Nice, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky composed while
Chagall created masterpieces under the Riviera sun.

La diaspora russa resta ancora oggi molto affezionata a

ospita una cappella in memoria del granduca Nicola,
deceduto proprio in quel luogo nel 1865. Realizzata
in stile bizantino, la cappella situata nella principesca
Villa Bermond, fu consacrata alla presenza del futuro
zar Alessandro III. A pochi passi, sulla Rue Longchamp,
la chiesa russa ortodossa è la più antica al di fuori della
madre patria, edificata prima che Nizza diventasse
francese, nel 1860. Finanziata dalla imperatrice
Alexandra Feodorovna, vedova di Nicola I, ospitò la
proclamazione a erede al trono imperiale di Alessandro
II. Con meno clamore, fu in questo complesso che il
principe Pierre Vjazemskij, amante delle arti, insediò
una piccola biblioteca parrocchiale nel 1860.
Per assaporare realmente la potenza e la poesia
dell’arte russa, non può mancare un pellegrinaggio al
Museo Chagall, verso Cimiez. “Non so dove trovi queste
immagini”, affermò Picasso riferendosi al turbinio delle
sue tele bibliche. “Deve avere un angelo in testa”.
Noto per le sue tinte violacee e i suggestivi voli
pindarici, Chagall fu anche un impeccabile colorista.
“Alla morte di Matisse”, predisse Picasso, “Chagall sarà
l’unico artista a capire cosa sia realmente il colore”.
Un tempo dimora dei russi bianchi, diverse ville
divennero università o sedi di istituzioni; fra le altre, il
palazzo della Principessa Kotschoubey è oggi Museo
delle Belle Arti, il quale ospita, in maniera piuttosto
calzante, opere di Marie Bashkirtseff, la prolifica
pittrice e diarista russa. Marie tesseva le lodi della sua
città adottiva: “Nizza è il mio paese; Nizza mi ha fatto

Russian churches still adorn the Riviera but none
is bolder than St Nicholas Cathedral (the interior is
currently closed for restoration). Constructed in 1903,
this Orthodox extravaganza was inspired by the
ancient onion-domed churches around Moscow.
The Russian diaspora continues to care for this symbol
of pre-Soviet splendour. In the grounds is a memorial
chapel honouring Grand Duke Nicolas, who died on the
same spot in 1865. The Byzantine-style chapel, set on
the site of the princely Villa Bermond, was consecrated
in the presence of the future Tsar Alexander III. Nearby,
on Rue Longchamp, the Russian Orthodox Church is the
oldest outside Russia, built before Nice became French
in 1860. Financed by the Dowager Empress Alexandra
Feodorovna, the widow of Nicholas I, this was where
Alexander II was proclaimed heir to the Imperial throne.
Less grandly, it was in this complex that the arty Prince
Pierre Viazemsky also founded a small parish library
in 1860.
To wallow in the power and poetry of Russian art,
it has to be a pilgrimage to the Chagall Museum towards
Cimiez. “I don’t know where he gets those images,”
said Picasso of this swirling tableau of Biblical scenes.
“He must have an angel in his head.” With his purplish
passion and vivid flights of fantasy, Chagall was also
a supreme colourist. “When Matisse dies,” Picasso
predicted, “Chagall will be the only painter left who
understands what colour really is.”
Although various White Russian villas became
universities or institutions, Princess Kotschoubey’s
palace is recast as the Museum of Fine Art. Fittingly,
on display are works by Marie Bashkirtseff, the prolific
Russian painter and diarist. Marie sang the praises of her
adoptive city: “Nice is my country; Nice made me grow;
Nice gave me health and a beautiful complexion.” (All

this praise despite brief banishment after Marie’s monkey
bit Anna Tolstoy’s son). The novelist Count Leo Tolstoy
had come to the Riviera in 1860 for the sake of his
brother’s health but had not factored in monkey attacks.
In Cannes, the Russian legacy is symbolized by
another oriental, onion-domed fantasy, but also by
eclectic villas. The lofty Californie district is dotted
with villas linked to the White Russian colony who
once wintered here. Avenue du Roi Albert, the grandest
stretch, is home to Villa Kazbeck, named after the
summit of the Caucasus. This stern mansion was the
residence of Grand Duke Mikhailovitch, the uncle of
Tsar Nicholas II. Here, he wined and dined crowned
heads, including the British King, Edward VII.
Further up the hill is a quaint relic from this rival
empire: Villa Les Lotus, modelled on a romantic English
folly, is an overblown cottage topped by comical brick
chimney-stacks. Nearby, on Avenue Jean-de-Noailles,
looms Villa Rothschild, built by Baron James de
Rothschild. Confiscated first by the Nazis and then by
Cannes, the villa is now tamed as a city library.
As for Monaco, the Romanovs and the Grimaldi
came to power within a year of one another, between
1612-13, and this oddly respectful State relationship has
flourished for over 350 years. The dynastic bonds have
survived both the Russian Revolution and the Russian
takeover of Monaco football team. The Year of Russia
celebrates the avant-garde nature of Russian art, with
tributes to Chagall and Kandinsky. The embrace of the

crescere; Nizza mi ha dato la salute e uno splendido
incarnato” (tante lodi malgrado un breve bando dopo
che la sua scimmia morse il figlio di Anna Tolstoj).
Il romanziere e conte Lev Tolstoj approdò in Riviera nel
1860, per ragioni di salute del fratello, senza peraltro
mettere in conto possibili aggressioni di scimmie.
A Cannes, l’eredità russa è ancora ben visibile
in un’altra stravagante opera orientale dalla cupola
arrotondata, ma anche in ville decisamente eclettiche.
L’alto quartiere Californie è costellato di ville collegate
in qualche modo alla colonia di Russi bianchi che un
tempo svernava in questi lidi. Su Avenue du Roi Albert,
il tratto più maestoso, si erge Villa Kazbek, che prende
il nome dalla cima caucasica, una dimora dall’aria
severa, residenza del granduca Michajlovic, zio dello
Zar Nicola II. Qui ospitò teste coronate, fra cui il re
britannico Edoardo VII, intrattenendole con cibi e vini
prelibati. Più oltre, risalendo la collina, si incontra un
pittoresco cimelio proprio del rivale impero britannico:
Villa Les Lotus, una follia romantica inglese, un cottage
dall’aspetto eccessivo, sovrastato da due buffi camini
in mattoni. Poco lontano, sulla Avenue Jean-de-Noailles,
si affaccia Villa Rothschild, costruita dal Barone James
de Rothschild. Confiscata prima dai nazisti poi da
Cannes, la villa ospita ora una biblioteca.
Quanto a Monaco, ì Romanov e i Grimaldi salirono
al potere a un anno di distanza gli uni dagli altri, nel
1612-13, creando una relazione fra Stati stranamente
rispettosa che dura da più di 350 anni. I legami dinastici

sono riusciti a sopravvivere alla Rivoluzione russa tanto
quanto all’acquisto del Monaco da parte di una società
russa. L’Anno di Russia intende celebrare la natura
avanguardistica dell’arte di questo paese, facendo
tributo a Chagall e a Kandinskij. L’abbraccio dell’orso
russo viene onorato anche in un’esposizione al Palazzo
dei Principi, aperta fino al 6 settembre 2015.
Ma l’orso abbraccia con lo stesso calore anche la
Riviera italiana. Tutte le sue cittadine, infatti, recano
i segni della presenza russa nei loro viali, come il
Lungomare Imperatrice di Sanremo, una passeggiata che
prende il nome della dinastia imperiale. Fu la zarina
Maria Alexandrovna, moglie dello zar Alessandro II, che
donò al viale le sue prime, lussureggianti palme. A poca
distanza, la chiesa russa ortodossa ospita le sepolture
del re Nikola e della regina Milena di Montenegro, che
morirono in esilio a San Remo nei primi anni ‘20.
Sulla sommità della collina, si trovano i giardini dedicati
a loro figlia, Elena, che divenne Regina d’Italia sposando
Vittorio Emanuele III. Visto l’animo slavo di Sanremo,
qualche anno fa San Pietroburgo le fece dono di una
statua simbolica. La presenza russa continua a fare
sentire la sua essenza: dopo una visita in un negozietto
di icone, si può perlustrare una profumeria che vende
“profumi dei Romanov”, basati sui fiori tanto amati
dalla dinastia imperiale. Non resta allora che assaporare
la fragranza, facendosi trasportare ai tempi in cui il
Carnevale era una festa russa di carrozze e granduchesse
mascherate da rose e viole.

The Russian Bear also embraces the Italian Riviera
just as warmly. Every Riviera city has avenues recording
Russians, such as Lungomare Imperatrice in Sanremo, a
promenade named after the Imperial dynasty. It was the
Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna, the wife of Tsar Alexander
II, who donated the avenue’s first swaying palms.
Nearby, the Russian Orthodox Church contains the
tombs of King Nikola and Queen Milena of Montenegro,
who died in exile in Sanremo in the early 1920s. At the
top of hill are gardens in honour of their daughter, Elena,
who became Queen of Italy, married to Victor Emmanuel
III. Given Sanremo’s Slavic soul, St Petersburg presented
the resort with a symbolic statue a few years ago. The
Russian flavour lingers on: after browsing in a Russian
icon shop, you can slip into a perfumery selling
`Romanov scents’ linked to the flowers beloved by the
Imperial dynasty. Breathe in the perfume and remember
when Carnival was that famous, rose-and-violet scented
Russian party.

site. Since 2008, when the bid was won, Milan’s skyline
has been transformed. The transport infrastructure has
been expanded and the amount of green space doubled.
The navigli, the city’s famous canals, have had a facelift.
The Porta Nuova business district has sprung up, all
glass towers, green space and cycle paths. The official
estimate of Expo’s earnings is €25 billion, through
tourism and ticket sales; if visitor numbers continue at
the rate they have started, the city expects its economy
to receive a massive boost.
What will happen to the Expo site is undecided at the
time of writing. Ideas for a stadium, a science campus
for the University of Milan and a tech hub for startup
companies have all been thrown around. We do know
that many of the exotic pavilions, which take the shape
of anything from a grain of corn to a beehive, will be
dismantled and taken away but the memory imprinted
on the city, and hopefully, the global consciousness
about hunger, will last far, far longer.
Expo 2015 è una sorta di connubio fra un lussuoso
parco tematico e la severa sede di dibattiti e scambi
diplomatici. Si può passeggiare fra i food truck del
padiglione USA, fra pareti simili a infinite dune di sabbia
nell’esposizione degli Emirati Arabi o scoprire i segreti
della produzione del caffè bio nel padiglione Uganda.
In tutto il complesso, circa 150 ristoranti servono
specialità locali, di cui 15 sono avamposti della celebre
Eataly, che guida i visitatori alla scoperta della migliore
cucina italiana. Ogni giorno il programma è scandito
da manifestazioni, giochi d’acqua e, fino a fine agosto,
addirittura performance del leggendario Cirque du
Soleil. Quanto ai contenuti più seri, la Carta di Milano
scaturita da Expo ha l’obiettivo di convincere i singoli,
le imprese e i governi a sostenere alcune soluzioni
finalizzate a risolvere il problema della fame nel mondo.
Ma l’impatto di Expo si fa sentire ben oltre il
complesso espositivo. Dal 2008, infatti, anno in cui
Milano si aggiudicò l’assegnazione, i contorni della
città hanno subito una profonda trasformazione. Le
infrastrutture dei trasporti sono state ampliate e gli spazi
verdi raddoppiati. Anche ai Navigli, i famosi canali della
città, è stato rifatto il trucco. Nel distretto commerciale
di Porta Nuova sono spuntati come fiori grattacieli, spazi
verdi e piste ciclabili. Secondo le stime ufficiali, i profitti
di Expo ammontano a 25 miliardi di euro in turismo e
vendite di biglietti; se i numeri continuano a mantenersi
ai livelli iniziali, la città prevede uno slancio enorme per
la sua economia.
Il destino del complesso espositivo di Expo dopo la
manifestazione non è ancora noto al momento in cui
questo articolo è stato scritto. Si parla di uno stadio, di
un campus scientifico per l’Università di Milano o di un
polo tecnico per le start-up. Si sa che molti degli esotici
padiglioni - delle forme più disparate, da un chicco di
mais fino all’alveare - saranno smantellati e trasferiti;
tuttavia, la memoria che hanno lasciato sulla città e, si
spera, la consapevolezza sul tema della fame a livello
mondiale dureranno molto, molto più a lungo.

A calendar of events for every day is published on the
Expo website, from lectures and discussions to tastings
and cookery demonstrations in the various pavilions.
There are daily cookery demonstrations at 15.30 and
every evening, at the Cereals and Tubers cluster, DJs
from RAI play world music until 21.00, attracting a lot
of locals who come after work for the atmosphere.
From Wednesday to Sunday until the end of August,
there are Cirque du Soleil performances of Allavita, a
production created especially for Expo. Even if you
miss this, see the daily light shows at the Lake Arena
(www.expo2015.org).
Other notable events in the city include Segantini – Il
ritorno a Milano (18 September 2015-18 January 2016),
at the Palazzo Reale and Museum of Museums
(modern art, including Futurism, which was born in
Milan (until October, www.museodelnovecento.org)

La Scala, for the first time in its history, stays open until
October 31, staging The Barber of Seville, La Boheme,
Donzetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore and Verdi’s Falstaff.
Numerous guest orchestras will play; the London
Philharmonic performs Tchaikovsky on September
7, while Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty shows from

Week, meanwhile, takes place September 23 to 29.

Westminster
This unique London tradition dates back to the year
1215, when King John allowed London to elect its own

Every year, Norway donates a beautiful Christmas tree
to Britain as a sign of gratitude for Britain’s support

on – and choirs gather around the tree to sing
Christmas carols.

ROSARIO PARRINELLO, artist and inventor of the
ceramic work using lava stone from Etna, was born in
and lives in Caltagirone, a city renowned for thousands
of years of tradition in craftsmanship and trade.
Situated 60km from Mount Etna, Caltagirone is an
historic town that has over the millennia been visited
by Phoenicians, Byzantines, Arabs, Greek-Sicilians,
Saracens, Normans, French and Genoese. Perched on
ancient mountains where every stone echoes history
and memories of famous names from Archimedes to
Napoleon, Caltagirone has been protected by UNESCO
since 2002 as a World Heritage Site.
Against this historical backdrop, artist, inventor
and entrepreneur Rosario Parrinello has from an early
age harboured a dream to build a business that could
merge the great tradition of ceramics from Caltagirone
with modern design. He has always wanted to create
something that endures and at the same time embraces

Made a Mano Srl’s work is exported worldwide,
from America to Australia, for kings, princes, actors and
celebrities – or for clients who simply love good taste,
by owning a unique piece that they can admire and use
every day in the kitchen, the bathroom, the pool or to
enrich a wall or a fireplace, to embellish a room or to
create a restaurant or a public space.
The company cooperates with several architectural
firms, not least Studio Lissoni that has recently used both
lava stone and the handmade cotto in “Oste e Cuoco”
– the Sicilian restaurant of legendary chef Filippo La
Mantia in the heart of Milan. In London, the hospitality
design firm Hirsch Bedner Associates specified Made a
Mano Srl’s lava stone in the recently-opened “IDDU” – a
Sicilian café in SW7, next door to the South Kensington
Club (both properties being run by the Sicilian hotelier,
Luca Del Bono). Future London commissions for Made
a Mano Srl include a luxurious spa.
Many other works are in progress with the company’s
handmade cotto or glazed lava stone, each piece cut
and decorated to the customer’s individual preference.

Maremma cuisine is based on the
unsalted sciapo bread, as well as
fresh fish and game, hare and wild
boar in particular. Try buglione,
made with lamb and scottiglia, which
is made with veal, rabbit, pork,
chicken and guinea fowl. Caldaro is
a traditional fish soup, including
rockfish, monkfish, John Dory,
cuttlefish, octopus and mantis shrimp.
What to buy
Visit the pretty medieval town of
Bolgheri, a 40-minute drive, to buy
the famous Sassicaia wine from
Tenuta San Guido. Also look out for
Bolgheri DOC wines, and labels such
as Morellino di Scansano and Vino
Nobile di Montepulciano. Other good
buys include olive oil and in season,
truffles.

Maremma is a vast nature reserve,
ideal for hiking, mountain biking
and horse riding along the 120 km
Roccastrada trail, which passes
through some of the most beautiful
scenery. Golfers will enjoy the
Punta Ala Golf Club, as well as the
Argentario, Terme di Saturnia and
Toscana Golf Club in Gavorrano,
while Punta Ala Yacht Club has a
highly-acclaimed sailing school.
