Video file formats are containers that store audio, video, and metadata for playback on computers. Some common video file formats include MPEG, MOV, AVI, WMV, RealVideo, and SWF. MPEG files use the extensions .mpg or .mpeg and the latest version is MPEG4 which uses .mp4. MOV was designed by Apple for QuickTime movies and uses .mov or .qt extensions. AVI was introduced by Microsoft in 1992 and still widely used with the .avi extension. WMV stands for Windows Media Video and uses .wmv, while RealVideo requires RealPlayer software and uses .rm, .ram, or .ra extensions.
