Microsoft's solution there is that we have a solution, Virtual Server, in market, and now with Windows Server 2008, a key feature of Windows Server 2008 is Hyper-V, our hypervisor-based virtualization solution. That is in the process of coming to market and will be released to market within the next three to four weeks or so; which is great but that's just one kind of virtualization. Depending on the problem that you're trying to solve, there are a number of different virtualization technologies that are important to take advantage of. So Application Virtualization: On clients the ability to do application isolation and to stream application on-demand is critical; if we think about the adaptive application delivery, which I'll talk to in a minute, and we have the leading virtualization capability here with Microsoft Application Virtualization. Desktop virtualization: Virtual PC has been in market for awhile, and then we announced an acquisition of a company called Kidaro to really enable enterprise-class desktop virtualization solutions and scenarios. Then presentation virtualization, which you may know of as Terminal Services, but the ability to centrally manage and host an application and the data, and just serve out the interaction with that, so present it up to a user remotely. All of these different pieces can play a role in the solution that you're trying to solve for, but what's critical is at the heart of this is management. In a virtualized world, management becomes much, much more critical in enabling some of these dynamic scenarios that we talk about. So, take a broad view and think about desktop to datacenter.”

No need to learn a new system. - 80% of virtualized machines are Windows – this allows you to run Windows on Windows.2) System Center is a full lifecycle management product that deploys, monitors and backs up both your virtual and physical infrastructure from one platformThe messages to get across here are: - Management becomes essential with virtualization because a) when resources are virtual, you need management to act as the “radar screen” to know where resources are located and b) to unlock the ability to dynamically move resources around, you need policy and model-based systems that can get resources to the right place in real-time - You want a single pane of glass to view both your physical and virtual resources – you don’t want to create islands of virtual (which is all you can do with VMware) as that adds complexity to your mgmt process. - You want to be able to gain knowledge down at the application level to truly enable dynamic allocation of resources. Only System Center can do this – VMware will only tell you about the state of a virtual machine.3) Refer back to the key scenarios: It is the combination of virtualization and management that unlocks business value.The messages to get across here are: – Server 2008 with System Center is what allows you to build a foundation for a dynamic datacenter - The combination of the two products enable you to achieve the key scenarios of virtualization: - With VMM, you can easily convert physical servers to virtual server, enabling server consolidation - With DPM you can build the foundation for your business continuity plan - With SCCM you can patch virtual and physical servers so they’re always up to date - And with SCOM you can monitor the health of your VMs and apps running inside, providing the data to dynamically provision the right server to the right host in real-time.4) This combined solution is very cost effective – and approximately one third the price of VMwareThe messages to get across here are: - The Enterprise license for Windows Server 2008 list at $3,999 – this allows you to have up to 4 copies of Windows running on your physical server/host - The System Center Enterprise Suite lists at $860 – this allows you use of all four System Center products on an unlimited number of virtual guests per physical server/host - Combined, the cost is approximately $4,860 – approximately one-third the price of VMware’s Enterprise offering which is approximately $14,700 – for all the same features.In sum, the message of this slide is to show that Microsoft is clearly in the game with this combined offering – with similar features and business benefits – at a much lower cost than VMware.
