• #3: The data center can be viewed as an “information factory” where data is received, processed, refined, and then stored for future use.When business needs call upon that data to facilitate transactions and decision making, the data must be made available in a timely fashion.The core components of the data center are, of course, processors, storage, and data. So when we plan an IT strategy, it is very important that we look at long-term trends.Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation. Thanks to Moore’s Law, CPU processing capabilities have been good to us. Doubling every 18 months or so, an average processor is today 103 times more powerful than it was at the turn of the decade. That is good, since the amount of data we have accumulated has grown 124 times in the same period. Both growth rates show no sign of stopping and can be expected to continue to grow in the next decade.Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation. But what about storage? Can we keep up? This is, of course, a challenge. When we look at drive density, the answer is, “almost, but not quite.” We find that disk drive density has grown steadily at 43 percent year-over-year. So data and CPU is growing faster than the disk drives’ ability to store the processed data.

Each array serves hundreds of servers, thousandsof VMs and applications and thousands of workloads.The challenge here is that that each application workload is additive. The array has be capable of supporting the cumulative IO-pressure of ALL the applications.Sometimes at the same time!Even if it was possible to tune the array by hand for the exact workload mix in a given point in time, A moment later the IO-mix of the workloads would have shifted and you would have to start over…Let’s take a closer look at why this is so…Note to Presenter (competitive differentiation): No other vendor can match the completeness of the VNX solution for optimizing storage efficiency and performance, combining: intelligent auto-tiering; responsive, SSD-based read/write cache; and flexible application deployments block or transactional NAS. IBM V7000, HP StoreServ (3PAR), Dell|Compellent and HDS offer some level of autotiering but lack SSD cache, while NetApp FAS and IBM XIV offer SSD cache but no autotiering for managed data placement.

As data constantly moves from active with a high IO demand to inactive with no IO demand, we MUST make sure data is located on the right storage tier -- when it is not demanding lots of IO, we keep it on low cost disk. But the moment it becomes active, we use SOFTWARE to move it to high performance, low latency FLASHThe very good news is that since we started shipping FAST 3 years ago, we have learned that roughly only 5% of your data is highly active at any point in time, which is why that you typically only need that small amount of FLASH to keep your array running at its very best.The success of this FLASH 1st strategy and the FAST Suite has been phenomenal! More than 60% of all VNX systems today ship with FLASH and FAST. This number is climbing! FLASH 1st is truly becoming the new norm!Typically a very small amount of flash can provide a very high percentage of the overall IOPS. Our target is roughly 5% Flash and that should serve 80% or more of the IOPS. In terms of overall value in Flash performance, Hybrid arrays are the best.
• #6: Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. So what’s the right way to build storage for the highest possible performance at the lowest cost? One approach is adding flash drives to a traditional hard disk based array (e.g. CLARiiON and the initial VNX platform). This approach allows you to consolidate multiple workloads and deliver low $/GB. However, since the system was not designed for flash, it limits the scalability and increases the cost.

A better option is the new VNX series Flash Focused design, By designing the system for Flash, you eliminate any bottlenecks to deliver the highest performance and the lowest latency. Then, by adding FAST VP tiering and NL-SAS drives, you can drive down costs for inactive data.

With the next generation VNX Series, EMC can deliver up to 5X the performance, just as affordably.The new family consists of 6 VNX Series platforms that will scale up to 6 petabytes.Note to Presenter:The VNX5200 will be available in Q4 2013These systems deliver more firepower, greater efficiency, better protection -- all with ease.Note to Presenter:While the VNX8000 architecture supports 1500 drives, it will be limited to 1000 drives initially. The 6 PB number is based on 1500, 4TB NL-SAS drives which are targeted for 2014.

The new VNX Series can deliver up 4times more virtual machines, Oracle and SQL block transactions and file operations. This gives VNX the power to run thousands of virtual machines with mixed workloads, making it an ideal consolidation platform.

By combining the VNX series architecture with EMC’s industry leading Fully Automated Storage Tiered with Virtual Pools (FAST VP) and FAST Cache, the VNX series is unstoppable. Never before has this level of performance been available in a midtier platform. In addition to improved block performance, the VNX series with MCx has dramatically improved the file performance for transactional applications. In this example with VMware over NFS, VNX with MCX delivers three times the performance at 60% better response time.With this improvement in file performance, the VNX NAS targets are expanded to include enterprise applications like VMware over NFS or Hyper-V over CIFS, virtual desktops, and transactional applications like Oracle over NFS. These enterprise applications require high performance transactions at the lowest possible response time.

• #15: Intel is driving performance in servers with multi-core technology. This allows a single server to deliver the performance of a rack of multiple servers. In addition to servers, storage arrays can take advantage of the same technology with up to 40 cores available in a dual controller array.

In addition to the new hardware, the other key to the new VNX performance is multi-core optimization or MCx.With the previous VNX operating environment based on FLARE, key services such as RAID were run on a specific CPU core. However as Intel increased the number of cores, this strategy became a bottleneck and limited the overall array performance.Now with MCx, you can see that all services can be spread across all the cores. This is why VNX with MCx can deliver up to 3 to 5 times the number of transactions.
• #18: Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. The new VNX series NxM modular architecture deliversmaximum flexibility and performance— without compromise. Storage processor modules (controller A and B) manage the storage pool and provides SAN block-level access (iSCSI, Fibre Channel, or Fibre Channel over Ethernet). X-Blades add scale-out shared networked file system support (CIFS, NFS or pNFS) and can be added independently without impacting the overall system or require planned down time. By adding up to 1500 drives (flash, SAS, NL-SAS) in any combination, the VNX architecture delivers superior firepower and capacity.

We have more choices formulating a storage- and data-management strategy today than ever before. FLASH gave us that!Does this mean that mechanical storage is dead?Far from it. But the mechanical disk drive has been liberated by FLASH to do what it does best: store data cheaply. The media cost of a 3 TB disk drive today is an extremely low at less than 50 cents per GB. That’s great news for cold data!FLASH is the other extreme. It delivers 3000X better I/O performance. This makes it very efficient choice for highly active data that can take advantage of the super low latencyThis new reality has caused new deployment models to emerge.The first place we put Flash was in our traditional enterprise arrays making them hybrid arrays. Our secret sauce is FAST, Fully Automated Storage TieringA relatively new technology in the marketplace delivers even greater performance. Now, server-based PCIe Flash technology is accelerating I/O performance by even another order of magnitude over Flash drives. At 2,000 I/O s per second (IOPS) per gigabyte, PCIe Flash can run 4,000 times faster than hard drives. EMC XtremSW Cache and XtremSF are examples of this technology.Note to Presenter (competitive differentiation): No other storage (or server) vendor has the total solution provided by VNX Flash 1st design combined with server-based PCI flash and a single flash software solution for virtual and physical server environments.

The EMC FAST Suite tiers both block and file data across heterogeneous drives and boosts the most active data to cache ensuring that customers never have to make concessions for cost or performance. FAST Cache, dynamically absorbs unpredicted spikes in system workloads.As that data ages and becomes less active over time, FAST VP tiers the data from high-performance to high-capacity drivesautomatically, based on customer-defined policies.This functionality has been enhanced with 4 x better granularity and new FAST VP Optimized solid state disks based on Enterprise Multi-Level Cell Technology to lower the cost per gigabyte.Note to Presenter (competitive differentiation): Flash is a game-changing technology for improving the performance and efficiency of external storage, and competing products use it in one of two ways: as a tier of storage with fixed or automated data placement; or as extended cache to improve hit rates and avoid reads from data resident on disk.Only VNX combines the two solutions to address the full range of potential benefits, with intelligent implementation where the flash tier and cache work together for the greatest performance benefit and most efficient use of flash resources. EMC application testing has clearly demonstrated the benefits of combining FAS VP and FAST Cache for maximum performance and efficiency benefits. IBM V7000, HP StoreServ (3Par), Dell|Compellent and HDS offer some level of autotiering but lack SSD cache, while NetApp FAS and IBM XIV offer SSD cache but no autotiering for managed data placement.
• #21: VNX FAST VP provides tremendous efficiency by moving cold, unused data to cost-effective high-capacity drives, thereby allowing the user to realize enormous savings in their storage media spend, while still including Flash in the mix.As you would expect, however, the media spend for Flash clearly stands out as being much larger than the other media types. This is where Deduplication will provide a substantial benefit.
• #22: Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. Mission critical data is contained within key applications and requires “Always On” availability. BUT while the cost of some software packages (Oracle, SAP, DB2) imply a certain amount of importance, the name of the database doesn’t always dictate how important the data is.INSTEAD the business models of the companies using these products truly defines what applications or databases are truly critical to their company.For example: Oracle database might be critical to a large financial organization while SharePoint is not important to them.Exchange might be the de facto messaging, file server, organizational, and scheduling tool for a company while SQL Server is rarely used. SharePoint might be the most strategic application within a smaller company.We have to understand which data is critical to their company. That is their Always On application. For these Always On environments, data loss is typically not an option and IT organizations are under pressure to reduce data loss and downtime for these environments.So how much is this data worth, and how much do you lose when an outage occurs?The cost of data loss is sometimes hard to quantify and most organizations don’t fully understand the impact until an event occurs.

Active-Active allows clients to access a Classic LUN (non-pooled) simultaneously through both SPs for improved reliability, ease-of management and improved performanceSince all paths are active, there is no need for the VNX storage processor to do a trespass to gain access to the LUN “owned” by the other storage processor on a path failure. This eliminates application timeouts during the path failover.The storage admin does not have to make any EMC specific configurations on either host side or storage side to leverage this functionality while using recommended standard versions of host and array softwareSince both paths are serving I/O, load balancing is improved and applications can see up to a 2x improvement in performance.This functionality is ideal for applications that need highest level of availability and do not require advanced data services like FAST or Snapshots. Active / Active is not offered by NetApp or Dell and can be used as a differentiator for applications that do not require pooled storage or advanced data services
• #24: Migrating file data has a number of challenges including the cost and complexity of the migration and the associated down time.Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation.VNX Virtual Data Movers (VDMs) are used for isolating Data Mover instances within a secure logical partition. VDMs are important for in-company multi-tenancy, as well as ease of use when deploying replication solutions. VDMs also support multi-protocol (NFS and CIFS) implementations.With VNX we will support automated, high speed failover of VDMs between separated VNX systems. Leveraging VNX Replicator for file systems, this online file migration requires only three steps, automatically migrates all snaps and settings, and allows the clients to continue operation during the migration.Note to Presenter (competitive differentiation): VDM Online File Migrations is an advantage over IBM Unified. Dell and HP are block only.
• #25: Now let’s move beyond simply protecting the data and apps, and extend the discussion to continuous operations across arrays and across sites i.e. never having downtime for data mobility reasons, migrations, and disasters.VPLEX is a unique technology that dramatically changes the status quo. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that with VPLEX, the same data can be made read / write accessible in two locations at the same time. We refer to this as “Active-Active” – contrasting it with the traditional “Active-Passive” arrangement in array-based replication, where only one site can be written to. Because of this Active-Active capability, VPLEX enables a range of NEW solutions that previously had not been possible.Why is this so important? Well, VPLEX takes technologies that were built assuming a single storage instance and enables them to function across arrays and across distance. This really tells the story in a nutshell. Because VPLEX enables data to be read/write accessible over distance, users can now take everything that had been constrained to a single data center and SPREAD it over distance - whether for stretching virtualized server environments, extending high availability clusters, or providing a continuous operating framework for data centers.Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation.The benefits of this include:Improved availability means never having downtime again, not for migrations or even unplanned outages. VNX with VPLEX allows for non-disruptive migrations…for ever and allows you to ride system or component failures without impacting data or application access.Increased asset utilization means having active-active access to information. No longer designing an active passive site where your passive resources are only activated in the event of a failure. With active-active access, all resources are utilized and all advanced functionality is made available across arrays and across sites. Flexible business operations means allowing you to change the way you do business. Allowing you to physically isolate workloads, load balance across arrays, undertake granular storage acquisition and the likes. VNX with VPLEX offers users a powerful new approach to storage at a distance. By removing many of the traditional limits associated with storage across arrays and at distance, VPLEX opens the door to a wide range of new use cases, and powerful benefits. Think about how your organization could leverage this technology for new architectures which improve availability, utilization, performance and provide dynamic data mobility within and across data centers

With VPLEX that can be extended to continuous availabilityAnd EMC Backup and Recovery solutions shorten the backup window and speed recovery in concert with deduplication to reduce the backup size.Note to Presenter (competitive differentiation): EMC provides the most complete set of solutions to address data protection needs from quick, self-service restore of individual files and mailboxes to complete DR, backup and archiving capabilities. RecoverPoint provides the unique capability to combine continuous data protection with sync or async remote recovery across multiple platform types. EMC also delivers backup and DR solutions for VMware (Avamar and RecoverPoint SRM integration with failover/failback) that provide superior functionality for VMware environments compared with competitive offerings. Competitors such as NetApp, HDS and Dell|Compellent rely on high frequency snapshots or third party applications (HDS uses InMage) to try and duplicate the granular restore capability of RCP.
• #27: RecoverPoint is an out-of-band, network-based solution that offers advanced capabilities to deliver enterprise-level data protection, replication, and disaster recovery. With RecoverPoint, companies can go from using different tools for every platform, whether physical or virtual, to one solution to protect volumes attached to any host or any application, that reside on any array platform—including non-EMC storage and recover from any-point-in-time. RecoverPoint provides synchronous local replication using continuous data protection (CDP), synchronous and asynchronous continuous remote replication (CRR), and concurrent local and remote (CLR) data protection, all with its any point-in-time recovery with journaling technology capabilities. The RecoverPoint family protects companies from data loss due to common problems such as server failures, data corruption, software errors, viruses, and end-user errors, while also protecting against catastrophic events that can bring an entire data center to a standstill. RecoverPoint 4.0 enhancements include a new virtual RecoverPoint appliance to reduce acquisition cost, synchronous replication over IP, and failover to Any-Point-in-Time with VMware SRM.
• #29: Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. One of the biggest shifts in IT is, of course, the move to server virtualization. It continues to have a profound impact on how we look at storage provisioning today.In the “good old days,” we typically had a single application running on a server. To meet performance objectives, we would create a RAID group and then carve out LUNs statically. With virtualization, that has all changed.Virtualization enables you to save on infrastructure and run more applications on fewer physical servers. To meet the growing and dynamic needs of the business, server virtualization pools server resources and enables dynamic provisioning and optimization of compute power and applications according to shifting business needs. To stay relevant, storage had to embrace this same pooling paradigm. Just like VMware VMotion allows you to move things around on the server side, EMC saw the need to allow data to move dynamically across different tiers of drives (from high performance to lower cost/high capacity) according to its business activity. Not only did such data movement make sense, it also had to be fully automated and self-managing.As the storage system takes on more and more automation and ongoing optimization, it needs more processing power. EMC knew this to be a central requirement for its next-generation midtier storage systems.
• #30: EMC and VNX is the best storage for virtual environments.According to a Wikibon survey conducted in 2012, EMC with VNX was voted best product for VMware integration, based on two factors—the importance of the integration from a customer’s perspective, and the quality of the integration. EMC VNX led the way in General Storage, Unified Storage and Block-only Storage.
• #31: EMC’s storage management portfolio simplifies visibility of the storage environment, enabling faster time to deploy & assure storage services for application availability. The products within the suite can be grouped into three categories. First are the element managers, which provide homogeneous storage platform provisioning, monitoring and alerting. These products are designed to work with a specific family of arrays. For VNX, this is the Unisphere Management SuiteNext we have storage analytics, which provides customers with real-time analytics for storage and virtual resources. Dashboards provide insight into performance and capacity, enabling customers to proactively identify abnormalities, as well as track the status for risk and health. EMC Storage Analytics for VNX which is designed specifically for VMware environments.The third category is Virtualization management integration, allowing the VMware administrator or the Microsoft Hyper-V administrator to extend their familiar management console for VNX related activities

It includes Unisphere, Unisphere Remote, and VNX Monitoring and Reporting.Unisphere’s easy-to-use, sleek interface provides a simple, task-based integrated management experience for the next-generation VNX series platforms. Unisphere Remote provides centralized multi-box monitoring for thousands of VNX and VNXe systems deployed in remote and branch offices. With this release Unisphere Remote 3.0 adds support for XtremSW cache server flash.The VNX Monitoring and Reporting software helps customers understand storage utilization and workload patterns in their VNX environments for problem diagnosis, trend analysis, and capacity planning.
• #33: The VNX series platform is optimized for virtualization with over 75 points of tight integration.Until today, one of the major challenges facing users in virtual environments was a management complexity gap. Storage administrators have access to detailed information on the array, but lack visibility into how the virtual server is configured and which virtual machines are consuming what for storage resources. VMware administrators, on the other hand, can see the details of the virtual server environment and virtual machines, but lack visibility into the storage system. On the VNX series, Unisphere, together with vCenter Server and VASA (VMware vStorage APIs for Storage Awareness) integration, makes storage management in a virtualized environment a seamless experience. Each administrator can use their familiar interface to gain full visibility into virtual and physical resources, transparently provision storage, integrate replication, and access and offload all storage functions to the storage system. To further drive efficiency in the VMware space, EMC has delivered on the VMware vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI) for both SAN and NAS connections, allowing the VNX series to be fully optimized for virtualized environments. This technology offloads VMware storage-related functions from the server to the storage system, enabling more efficient use of server and network resources for increased performance and consolidation.Letting the VNX series perform common data management tasks, like vMotion, results in more network I/O, more virtual machines, and faster response time.The VNX series delivers unmatched VMware management integration and optimization and is ideal if you are running VMware.
• #35: EMC Storage Analytics for VNX is based on VMware vCenter Operation Manager Suite anddelivers real-time, predictive analysis and facilitate immediate resolution of storage performance issues. This solution is tailored for VNX Series storage in virtualized environments.There are 3 pre-packaged Dashboards that EMC provides as part of EMC Storage Analytics for VNXThe Storage Topology Dashboard view shows all the resources that reside on the physical ESX server. the Storage Metrics view which shows the storage systems, and within those systems you can also see the subcomponents in a hierarchal format. These relationships enable the administrator to quickly view the most relevant anomalies and resolve issues quickly. This is the 3rd Dashboard, Performance-at-a-Glance which allows you to view heat maps of array performance and capacity availability across multiple systems. These views enable the administrator to quickly seethe most relevant anomalies and take action to resolve issues quickly.
• #36: EMC Storage Integrator (ESI) is targeted towards the Windows and Application administrator. Typically, the application or database administrator does not have conversations with the storage admin, hence the need for a tool like ESI to bridge that gap. ESI is easy to use, delivers end-to end monitoring, and is hypervisor agnostic.ESI has a GUI component and a PowerShell component. ESIs User Interface is essentially a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in and its looks and feels like a Microsoft product. Any Windows admin familiar with Microsoft’s Server Manager will be at ease with ESI. There are two main use cases that are being addressed with ESI. Provisioning in both virtual and physical environments for a Windows platform. Troubleshooting: view the topology of an application to the underlying hypervisor to the storage. The first application that EMC chose to support is SharePoint. With ESI, you can accelerate the task of provisioning storage for your SharePoint environment by 4X.In a typical environment, a storage admin creates a LUN, a Database admin creates a database and then a SharePoint admin creates the Web application on the database. If all the admins execute their respective tasks in a sequential order it would take about 90 minutes. In the real world, this takes a lot longer as you are waiting for one or more admins to get to this work order. With ESI however, all you need is a Storage Pool and one can accomplish the same task in about 20 minutes.Currently we support all three hypervisors—VMware, Hyper-V and XenServer.
