Week 2

Understanding how the Multifunctional Mobile Robot functioning.

Multifunctional mobile robot was designed for user to start develop smart robot. It is a
line following robot with optional add on gadget and capable of line following, distance measure,
and control wirelessly. It also provides LCD (2X16 Character) and buzzer for user to indicate the
condition or status of the robot that useful for debugging and testing.

System Overview

Description about the Multifunctional Robot:
In this robot consists of PIC controller (PIC 16F877A) with powerful (200 nanosecond
instruction execution) yet easy-to-program (only 35 single word instructions) CMOS FLASH-
based 8-bit microcontroller packs. Microchip's powerful PIC® architecture into a 40- or 44-pin
package and is upwards compatible with the PIC16C5X, PIC12 CXXX and PIC16C7X devices.

Features of the device:
• 256 bytes of EEPROM data memory
• Self programming
• 2 Comparators
• 8 channels of 10-bit Analog-to-Digital (A/D) Converter
• 2 capture/compare/PWM functions
• Synchronous serial port can be configured as either 3-wire Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI™)
or the 2-wire Inter-Integrated Circuit (I²C™) bus.
• Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (UART).All of these features make it ideal for
more advanced level A/D applications in automotive,

In this multifunctional mobile robot also compatible to add on extra function such as:
    • Ultrasonic Range Finder (MaxSonar-EZ1)
It offers very short-range to long-range detection and ranging in an incredibly small
package with ultra low power consumption. It also can detect from 0-inches to 254-
        inches (6.45 meter).
    • Analog Distance Sensor (SN-GP2Y0A21)
It offer sharp’s general purpose distance measuring sensor.
    • XBee Module (SKXBEE)
It offers indoor communication range up to 30m and outdoor line of sight range up to
        100m.
    • PS2 Controller (SKPS)
Use to control the robot. Communicate with host microcontroller through 5V TTL
       UART.

In this project only XBee will be add on which offer indoor communication up to 30m and have
ability be controlled by using computer keyboard. There also will be another function which is
by add on spy cam that able to see trough the computer when the robot moving. These give extra
ability for the robot became useful to capture video.

Week 3

On week 3, after receiving the component, continue assemble the component to become
Multifunctional Mobile Robot. It needs to be careful for every component that has polarity such
as a capacitor, diode, PIC, LM7805, LM324, Buzzer and LED or it may cause the circuit board
fail to work. But with the help from the user manual gives guideline to assemble it properly.
Referring to schematic diagram also gives an extra guideline which easier to assemble the right
component.

The schematic
At the same time, it takes some time to buy spy cam and USB 2.0 Video Adapter with audio at
Lowyat. The USB 2.0 Video Adapter with audio is for capture the video that the spy cam
captures. It also uses to record the video .Usually the spy cam use television the view the video.
So by using USB 2.0 Video Adapter with audio give us ability to view the video using laptop or
computer easily.

Week 4

For this week, the entire components already have been soldering into the PCB. After
finishing the work, it takes time to understand how the robot will work. Then after finish
understanding how it works, PIC need to be program using the PIC programmer that uses to load
the programming into the PIC.

The guideline given a little bit confusing, but after following the step one by one, the
programs that have been installed worked. Connection between the robot and the laptop by using
the PIC programmer was very important, if not it will cause an error. Not to forget when load the
program into the PIC the robot need to be switch ON first. After the robot was successfully
program the LCD will turn on and ready to move by following the line.

The line detection was detecting the black line (it also suitable for any color) and can
move from left to right depending on the line itself. Below is the example how the sensors
function when the robot follows a black line or white floor and a view of the placement of the
sensors.
