What is a possible evolutionary advantage of having introns/exons in genes? Give an example of
where this usage is observed or may have occurred.
Solution
Presence of large noncoding sequences such as introns interspersed with exons in the genome
lowers the rate mutations from appearing. Introns enable alternative splicing, a mechanism which
enables a single gene to encode multiple proteins that perform different functions under different
conditions. Small genome but large information stored. Regulatory RNAs such as siRNA
encoded by introns are known to regulate gene expression. Adds to biological complexity.
