What is Plagiarism ?
1
Definition of Plagiarism
According to Merriam Webster:-
● Derived from the Latin word plagiarius ("kidnapper"), to
plagiarize. means "to commit literary theft" and to present as
new and original an idea or product derived from an existing
source"
5
According to MLA Handbook for Writers of Research 7th edition
● Plagiarism involves two kinds of wrongs. Using another person's
ideas, information, or expres sions without acknowledging that
person's work constitutes intellec tual theft. Passing off-another
person's ideas, information, or expres-- sions as your own to get a
better grade or gain some other advantage constitutes fraud.

“Indian academics have contributed 35 per cent of all articles
published in various kinds of fake journals between 2010 and
2014. The International Consortium of Investigative
Journalists has identified over 11,000 fake journals during
the five-year period (2010-2015),” reads the committee’s
report submitted to the Human Resource Development
(HRD) ministry. “Plagiarism and data manipulation are
issues of great concern, which damage the credibility of
research emanating from our institutions.”
Neelam Pandey has reported in ‘The Print’
When Was in India the Plagiarism Performance Rate
Highest?
Copyleaks noted that..
In the period between 2007 and 2011, there were the highest plagiarism performance rates.
As a result, in 2015, the university grants commission has been declared mandatory in India
to check a Ph. D. thesis with anti-plagiarism software. On 26th June 2016, India’s
Government has decided to bring a law to resist this activity.
The punishments are different as per the pattern of plagiarism and the performer of the
activity. The penalty of plagiarism in the Indian academic field may affect the performer
student’s de-registration and the teachers’ suspension from their present designations.

Steps to Avoid Plagiarism.
4
Here are some steps to take to help avoid plagiarism
and to improve originality:
● According to Dr. Lonny
● Cite EVERYTHING! Ensure that EVERY assertation and statement of fact is
cited. If it is your own opinion or knowledge, say so. Otherwise, provide a
citation.
● Avoid quotes. Paraphrase the work of others in your own words – with
citations.
● Use software and services to check papers prior to submission. Time is
critical. Plagiarism and high similarity often result when students do not allow
enough time to properly complete assignments/papers.
