Who is Will Kane?
Who is Will Kane? New York Minute
New York Minute is the first book in a new series
by NYT bestselling author Bob Mayer featuring
former Green Beret Will Kane and set in New York
City in the late 1970s.
It’s based on Bob’s background growing up in the
Bronx, his time at West Point and in the Special
Forces. Like Bob, Will Kane has Aspergers, which
makes his social interactions awkward and,
sometimes, humorous.
But there is one thing Will Kane is very, very, good
at:
Taking action.
NEW YORK MINUTE
The last time former Green Beret Will Kane was
involved in killing someone it made the cover of
LIFE Magazine. Eight years later he’s getting
pushed to the edge of a precipice he vowed never
to go over again.
He has undiagnosed Aspergers, like many creative
people in the arts.
Except his art is death.
And he’s very, very good at it.
Kane was born to a garbage man and housewife in the
Bronx, New York City.
Raised in the Catholic Church, but long lapsed.
Kane’s Background:
Kane is a West Point graduate, class of 1966.
The class most blooded in the Vietnam War.
Kane is a veteran of two tours in Vietnam, his first with
the 173rd Airborne, where he loses his West Point
classmate and best friend in the same battalion.
Near the end of his tour, he’s wounded.
Kane’s second tour is with Special Forces, including
running highly classified cross-border missions.
Kane is serving under the real life Colonel who became
the template for Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now.
Kane is implicated as the gun man in the Green Beret
Affair, where a suspected double-agent is executed.
He’s jailed at Long Binh Prison on charges of murder.
The case goes all the way to the President, with the
secret bombing of Cambodia as an integral part of the
case.
The murder charge is dismissed, but Kane is
dishonorably discharged.
He returns to his hometown, New York City, just in time
to experience the worst imaginable personal tragedy in
November 1969.
Kane disappears overseas with his grief, only coming
back to NY in 1975, bringing with him Montagnard
refugees he’s rescued as well as a pair of Nung
mercenaries.
NEW YORK MINUTE
The story begins:

bankruptcy and unrest seethes in the streets.
NEW YORK MINUTE
On the dark streets of a city the rest of the country
believes is going down the toilet, Vietnam vet Kane’s life
mirrors his hometown.
NEW YORK MINUTE
Kane has been working as a ‘fixer’ for a high-priced
lawyer, the sister of his late friend from the 173rd and
West Point.
It begins with a simple job, taking a compromising picture
of a low level mobster in the seedy piers on the lower
West Side.
But it soon escalates, involving the Mafia; then a billion
dollars worth of construction contracts are on the line;
then the CIA shows up with ghosts from his covert past.
Kane is drawn slowly and steadily into a world he thought
he’d left behind.
Is he in over his head, or have the others made a mistake
in pushing a man who doesn’t give ground easily?
NEW YORK MINUTE
About the author: Bob Mayer up in the Bronx, New York
City. He graduated West Point, served in the Infantry,
including leading a Infantry platoon, a Battalion scout
platoon, and a Brigade recon platoon in the First Cav
Division. Then Special Forces (Green Berets), as an A-
Team executive officer, and later commanding an A-
Team. After leaving active duty he studied martial arts in
the Orient and was brought back for numerous ADSW
(Active Duty Special Work) tours in Special Operations.

books.
NEW YORK MINUTE
Eyes of the Hammer (Green Berets)
Stephen Coonts: “A scorcher of a novel. Mayer had me hooked from the very first page.”
Lost Girls (The Cellar) Publishers Weekly: “Excellent writing and well-drawn, appealing
characters help make this another taut, crackling read from Mayer.”
Cut Out (Green Berets) Kirkus Reviews: “Sinewy writing enhances this already potent
action fix.”
The Journal of US Special Operations: “This is one book you can trust.”
Bodyguard of Lies: “Heart-racing, non-stop action that is difficult to put down.”—Mystery
News
WEB Griffin: “Exciting and authentic. Author Mayer, a Green Beret himself, gave me a
vivid look at the world of the Army’s Special Forces. Don’t miss this one.”
The Assembly Magazine (Association of Graduates, West Point): “Mayer brings an accurate
depiction of military life to this book which greatly enhances its credibility.”
The Line (Shadow Warriors) Publishers Weekly: “Mayer has crafted a thriller in the
tradition of John Grisham’s The Firm.”
Who protects the sheep from the wolves?
Another wolf.
Ex-Green Beret William Kane has crossed the line he vowed
never to: killing. But for every action there is a reaction and
now there are forces after him for revenge, chief among
them the IRA. The CIA hasn’t forgotten about him either.
As the long hot summer of 1977 drags on and the Bronx
burns, Kane does some burning of his own, unraveling
secrets from his past and helping those who need his
particular brand of justice.
His problem: where is his new line? Who can he really trust?
A BLOOD DEBT MUST BE PAID WITH BLOOD
This is the message pinned to Will Kane’s door with a Bowie knife. It doesn’t
take long before the first of the Hard Flint Brothers arrives to make good on
the threat.
Kane barely escapes with his life, but things go downhill from there, with five
more Brothers swearing to take his life in vengeance for his killing of one of
their own.
But lurking behind it all, Kane is beginning to feel the presence of something
bigger, an organization more secret than the CIA or FBI. One that has ties
stretching back to World War II and involves the highest levels of power and
Death lurks below.
Will Kane finds a body underneath Hell Gate Bridge. Where this gruesome discovery
leads him is a world even he, a New York native, never dreamed existed. No one
knows the full extent of the labyrinth that lies below New York City. It's a world unto
itself. There are those who prowl the darkness for their own evil reasons.
He learns this isn't an isolated incident and that murders are being committed in
horrendous ways. The police, not able to control the streets above, care little about
what’s below and the missing. It's up to Kane to find out who is behind this. And as he
literally digs deeper, he realizes it reaches to the highest levels of New York City.
Will Kane has faced down the NVA, the IRA, the CIA and the Mafia. But
now he runs into the most intense challenge of his life. Someone is
trafficking children in New York City. Someone who has connections to
very powerful people who want this kept very secret. Kane’s investigation
is getting too close.
But he can’t back off; not when children are involved. It’s war.
And there will be no quarter taken or given.
