The Benefits of OER The concept of being able to use resources, without having to worry about permissions or availability, that you can mix and match other openly licensed materials with, and freely share it with learners seems so good. And it is, and they are out there waiting to be discovered. Here are some advantages to using them:
- 3. Advantages ● FREE ● Easy access ● Ability to update and tailor educational materials ● Growing resource, with more and more OER being developed ● Students, and even institutions, saving money by using available OER textbooks
- 4. Disadvantages As good as it is, there’s still apprehension in using OER. It’s in no way perfect yet, nor will it immediately change the world of education within a blink of an eye. What are some disadvantages of OER?
- 5. Disadvantages ● Limited resources still, especially for content in Industrial/Manufacturing industry ● Quality of items ● Internet dependency ● Still an uphill battle to promote the use and creation of OER ● Educators and still a number of institutions worldwide accepting the change
- 6. Let’s pay it forward. The best way to make OER known to the rest of world is to pay it forward and keep creating and using OER and to show that the pros outweigh the cons.
