 It is the process by which he or she take control of authority or
posses power to do something.
Power is the root in empowerment. Power can be understood in
different ways:

• It is awareness of gendered power structures, self-esteem, and
self-confidence.
• Micro-finance with Self Help Groups play an effective role for
promoting women empowerment .
“Women are worshipped as goddess in INDIA,
But not given her true position.”

Why need of women empowerment?
• Gender discrimination.
• Women education.
• Deperived of Decision Making Power.
• Deperived of Freedom of Movement
• Deperived of Access Of Employment .
• Female infanticide .
• Dowry
• Marriage in same caste and child marriage.
• Atrocities on women: With their age, they have been
raped, kicked,killed, subdued & humiliated almost
daily.

SELF HELP GROUP
SHG is considered as right and best approach for the all-round development of the
society and thereby of the nation.
SHG help women to have a positive self-image and takes an active part in taking
decision for herself and her family.
SHG help women to possesses knowledge how to stand on her own feet.
SHG helps women to empower her children regardless of the sex.
It provide confidence to woman to feel ,confidence and competence to face
problems.

SHGs on different dimensions
Study Area: Three districts out of 19 districts of Arunachal Pradesh namely
Papum Pare, Lower Subansiri and Kurung Kumey.
Nature of the Study: empirical in nature based absolutely on field
survey.
Sampling Design and Size: Stratified random sampling method was adopted for
selection of 10 SHGs from each district for intensive study to achieve the proposed
objective. Total number of SHGs of three districts under study was 30 (10×3). 10
members of each SHG were selected. Therefore, total number of selected respondents
from 30 SHGs was 300 (30×10).
Tools for Data Analysis: The completed interview schedule shall be scrutinized,
verified, edited and arranged statistically. Simple numerical calculations, graphical
representations and women empowerment index (WEI) and activity wise change in
women empowerment have been considered to write up the report of the study.
Activity wise Change in Women Empowerment:
WEI = Ph×3 + Pm×2 + Ps×1 + Pn×0
• WEI = women empowerment index
• Ph = Percentage of empowerment have highly increased.
• Pm = Percentage of empowerment have moderately increased.
• Ps = Percentage of empowerment have slightly increased.
• Pn = Percentage of empowerment have no change
Impact of SHGs in Empowering Women
SHG have played a tremendous role in above
mentioned dimension of empowerment.
SHGs have helped the families to improve their
economic conditions.
 SHGs was the first step towards women
empowerment.
SHG approach is conceived to empower to each individual
woman in such a manner that she can face and solve all types of
problems in her life.
