Earn a film degree While there are no degree requirements to become a cinematographer, becoming highly skilled in your craft through film school is a key pathway to gaining those skills. Cinematography requires a lot of technical skills related to photography, so studying or majoring in photography could give you the foundation in camera work and processes needed to become a good cinematographer. 2. Practice photography As an aspiring cinematographer, it’s important to learn your craft by experimenting with filming and still photography to learn what works for shot composition. Consider taking time outside of filmmaking to shoot as much footage and photography as possible while taking only lighting jobs in the industry, for instance. Location Usually, the main area for not only cinematography but the media industry as a whole in the UK is London and looking at current job opportunities they are mainly based in London with Manchester and Leeds getting some exposure and opportunities so there might be a possibility that I would have to relocate to move up in my career. Even though, there are more opportunities in London the price to relocate there especially during the cost-of-living crisis would be an unethical decision as the salary for entry level roles is usually around £32,490 and although working in Media you can earn between £20,500 and £59,865 (according to Check-a-Salary) the high-end salary would not be available until I had gained years of professional experience. With average rent in London currently £26,316, which is by far the most expensive rate in the UK and almost £3,000 per year on monthly expenses. The average rental prices in London have increased by 14.3 percent compared to last year’s rental market data alone(according to https://www.rentlondonflat.com/). This means that if I were to relocate to London and earn an entry level position salary between £20,500 and £30,000 it would end up with me in debt and not being able to afford to live therefore when looking to break into the industry relocating to London would not be a wise decision.

- 31. Working Freelance Most people who work in film and TV drama work on a freelance basis. This is because a drama tends to be made on a project-by-project basis (except for continuing dramas). A drama is made once it’s 'greenlit', namely when all the business deals and funding arrangements have been put into place. The cast and crew are then recruited - and disbanded as soon as the drama has been made. Depending on your role and the length of the drama, you could be working on a production for just a few months and then find yourself looking for work again. There can be great joy in working on a project-by-project basis in this way. Every job is different. You always meet new people. You have periods of intense work followed by times of freedom and rest, which suits some people well. You are unlikely to get bored. Even though working freelance is how most people work in the industry by working this way job security is limited meaning you always have to be looking for work to keep a consistent income due to the unpredictable nature of working freelance it usually pays a bit more to compensate the lack of job security. This also applies when looking for work in technical theatre as contracts are usually on a temporary basis and finding work can be a struggle. Therefore, I need to weigh up my options when thinking about what I would like to work as. - 32. Regional Theatre and Touring Working in a regional theatre such as Sunderland Empire allows for a technician to be able to stay at home or local whilst developing their skills and knowledge. Depending on the type of theatre it means that only certain shows can visit the venue depending on their capacity. With a constant rotation of shows no day is quite the same however this also means that you can't perfect a show as much as you could due to the short lengths of runs(typically 1-2 weeks).Although with regional theatre it allows you to stay at home touring on a large or small scale allows you to travel to cities sometimes even countries you have never been to and although you are constantly on the move you will only work on one consistent show allowing you to know the show inside out and be able to develop your skill. Touring also allows you to visit a multitude of different theatres allowing you to develop skills and developing your ability to adapt quickly as not all venues will be the same and each will present new challenges.

Driving Being able to drive as a freelancer is highly beneficial not only do some companies and job posts require it as a skill but it allows for you to access more work and opportunities easier. In theatre it allows you to get to and from work in unsociable hours when public transport may have stopped or be on a reduced timetable making it harder to get home. Driving is crucial especially when touring or working away from home as it reduces the stress of navigating public transport or arranging lifts, but it also gives you the freedom to be independent and not have to rely on people to get you from A to B. This is also the case for TV and Film especially in entry level roles such as runners as most of the time job descriptions highlight a clean driving license as a requirement for the position as it makes the employer aware that you can not only travel independently but can go on errands for the employer or access more remote locations that couldn’t be accessed by public transport.
- 34. Evaluation of working in the Media Industry Media and theatre as a whole is a growing sector in the UK with more and more people being employed. Although there are many opportunities it is a highly competitive industry where experience stands out to an employer. To stand out I have many different areas I have explored and gained experience in, such as Northern stage Durham Fringe Festival and The Tempest to name a few. I have also developed specialist skills whilst doing work experience which can also stand out to an employer and put me apart from my competitors for a job. As a whole media is emerging more in the UK however most opportunities still remain in the south of the country therefore, I am prepared to leave home for work opportunities which also allows me not only to access more opportunities but shows to employers that I am flexible in where I work making me more appealing to an employer. I am also learning to drive which will allow me to access more opportunities when I get my license as this is seen as a vital skill by most employers. Overall, as the media industry is a competitive one, I am trying to gain knowledge and experience and develop specialist skills in order to stand out from my peers and increase my chances of gaining a position.
