Top 7 questions to ask yourself when choosing a gaming desktop or laptop

How much are you willing to spend on your gaming platform? You most likely don’t
have an unlimited budget, so it’s a good idea to settle on a maximum expense for
your new gaming laptop or PC. If you are worried about the price, remember that
other factors slightly mitigate that since you can use a custom PC for daily life and
work related tasks other than gaming!
If you really enjoy playing modern first person shooters, then graphics hardware
becomes a higher priority than Central Processing Unit (CPU) performance. If turn-
based war games are your thing, then a fast CPU may be more important than a
high-end Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). Real-time strategy games often require a
balance between graphics and CPU.
Consider your display size, resolution and refresh rate. Once you understand which
types of games you’ll be playing, you should think about the Graphics Processing
Unit. Even in CPU demanding titles, graphics are very important, so you want to buy
the greatest possible video card within your budget. However, there’s no reason to
purchase two high-end Nvidia graphics cards when you only have a 17-inch 1080p
monitor.

Memory is important for all gaming platforms. Currently the two popular DDR
memory types are DDR3 and DDR4. It is smart to go with at least 4GB of memory if
you’re running a 64-bit version of Windows. Windows 10 (64-bit) currently supports a
maximum memory configuration of 128GB, yes 128GB! You’ll most likely never need
that much RAM in your lifetime but it’s good to know. Just remember that 8GB of
DDR3 will probably last you many years into the future.
In general, a quad-core processor from AMD or Intel can handle any PC game you
decide to play. You’ll find that many high-end gaming PCs are packed with Intel six-
core processors. But if you do photo and video editing plus other tasks that can take
advantage of six cores, then look for a nice eight-core AMD processor. If the main
purpose of your system is to play games, it’s better to dial back a little on the CPU
cost and add it to the graphics card or SSD/HDD capacity.
When buying a PC or a Laptop, you want to be sure that the motherboard has some
key features, such as plenty of USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports. Make sure your gaming
platform has a good design for airflow and allows room for future upgrades. This way
when technology advances as it does each year, you can switch out the old hardware
components with the new ones.
With any PC gaming system, you should seriously contemplate buying a solid-
state drive (SSD). The benefits of an SSD include fast boot times, incredibly quick
game loads and game level transitions, lower power usage, and less noise. The
combination of a small SSD (128GB and over) plus a 1TB hard drive offers better
performance than a single 1TB hard drive.
