Zebrafish are used to model type 2 diabetes in this study. The researchers developed a diet-induced obesity model in zebrafish by overfeeding them. This caused the zebrafish to exhibit high fasting blood glucose levels and glucose intolerance. Gene expression analysis found pathways dysregulated in the zebrafish model were similar to those in humans with type 2 diabetes. Anti-diabetic drugs reduced blood glucose in the zebrafish, demonstrating the model's potential for diabetes drug screening. The study concluded the zebrafish model can elucidate early mechanisms of type 2 diabetes pathogenesis and aid in drug discovery.
