Conventions of Film Poster
PurposeThis is a type of advertising for films before they are released in the theatres. It contains a basic image or design, not giving too much away. The purpose is to incite awareness and generate hype for the film. BriefPosters occupy a space between art and advertising. They have a clear commercial purpose - to promote an event or product - but they also have artistic value. People buy them and hang them on their walls. Museums have whole galleries devoted to poster art.Colour A wash out colour is used for the theme overall while the title of the film itself stand out more. There are no trace of vibrant colour except from the red on the chainsaw to emphasise the blood more.
Tag LineThe phrase “Nut up or shut up” is used as a pun tagline here. It’s a very short, yet very effective tagline to summarise the film. It’s catchy, rhymes and sounds like an order someone might give you. Key ImageThe four main characters are each holding a weapon, suggesting that the film will be an action packed with a lot of killing and violence involved. However, the way the female lead is standing next to the boy lead us to believe there might be an air of romance.. The background has a smoky effect with a wheel on fire – to enforce the destruction they cause in the film. Text ColourThe title certainly stands out since the colour used was a flaming orange/yellowish tone. The rest of the text on the poster are printed in white. The reason for the title being so eye-catching is so that it contrast from the mostly grey background.
TitleThe tile is the most important information to be included on a poster. The tile stretches across the poster, nicely centred in the middle of the top part. It is the focal point and catches the eye almost instantly. Actors’ NamesThis is used to inform the viewer who stars in the film. Some advertising focuses a lot on featuring the stars names a poster to gain audience of past films by the same actors.BackgroundThe background is made up of a grey smoky tone to contrast with the bright title. In the bottom left, zombies are visible but are not clearly visible, in order to keep the focus on the actors featured on. Billing BlockThis section informs the audience of the production crew i.e. who directs the film, produces it, visual effects etc… it usually also contains the release date and sometimes website for the film (twitter, facebook, myspace).
EffectivenessOverall, the poster achieves its goal by promoting the film in an effective visual form. It is clear, straight forward and gives the audience an idea of the film without even having to see a trailer. The main characters are easily identified and the theme of the film is incorporated within the poster. RealismAt first glance the poster does not look realistic at all. Teens and a child with weapons in their hands seems a little bit hard to believe. The way it has been edited makes the audience think they are ultimate warriors. It can however surely happen if the world encounters a zombie apocalypse though.
