EastEnders Poster Analysis
• Image: The image of the main character in the current storyline has been boldly presented on the
poster. The background image of East London has had its opacity lowered which allows the image
of Lucy Beale to stand out m ore clearly on the page. As well as this, the image has hints of red that
has been added to it. Red usually has connotations of danger which is suited to the storyline of her
murder and the current theme running through EastEnders at the time.
• Tag line: The language used connotes an impending doom for the city which EastEnders is set in as
it generalizes all of Walford, furthermore the use of “Change” works as a pull word for the audience
to watch in order to see whether the changes that will happen are going to be better or worse for
the city. However is association with the rest of the poster it is suggested that the change will be
negative. The use of the imperative one word sentence “Forever.” creates a sense of danger and
finality as it appears on it’s own, suggesting whatever the change is it will be irreversible and
significant to everyone as it highlights the importance of the word, making it more dramatic.
• Institution logo: The institution logo reveals to the audience and viewers where this program will
be shown and that it is explicit to that specific channel. This also promotes the channel itself as it
encourages viewers to visit the channel in order to watch the program.
• Synergy with social media: Synergy with social media in this poster is associated to ‘Twitter’. It is
key to have social media synergy in the poster as it creates another point of entry and allows the
audience to interact with the show using the twitter #hashtag. By using a popular media convention
such as the hashtag, it helps spread the brand identity of the soap across the web as it make sit
availiable for anybody with Twitter to access the #hashtag and be made aware of the soap.
• Brand Identity: The brand identity is very important in the poster as the existing audience will
recognize the logo, hashtag, and iconic background and identify the poster to be one for EastEnders
quickly.

Hollyoaks Poster Analysis
• Image: There has been clever manipulation added to this image which has
allowed the characters of the show, denoted in the poster, to look as if
they are on fire. The flame has connotations of heat and tension between
the characters and how the audience should expect fiery and exciting
scenes to come in the next episodes of the soap.
• Tag line: The tag line has been presented in a bold text and white
background around it to allow it to stand out against the fiery background.
‘The week that will change Holly Oaks forever’. This could signify to the
reader that there will be big events in the coming episodes and that they
could be of a negative or positive outcome for the characters.
• Institution ident: The institution logo used here clearly represents the
channel in which the soap is shown on. Like the the other pieces of text on
the page, it is presented in a way in which it stands out as the bold, 3D, ‘4’
is denoted in white so it will stand out against the fire colour of the image.
Student Exemplar Work – Textual Analysis
Student Work Poster Analysis
• Image: in this work, the images are used effectively to represent what the soap is about. The theme
of a wedding is clearly presented and there is clever fading of a church in the background whilst the
main image is of a giant wedding cake where characters from the soap are seated. This is a very
clever image as the black of the suits contrasts with the usual white theme of a wedding possibly
insinuating that the wedding will not be happy and have a negative aspect.
• Tag line: The theme of a negative wedding is carried on in the tag line with the words ‘I now
pronounce you betrayed forever’. This is a clever play on words as it is usually ‘I now pronounce you
husband and wife’ but by saying betrayed it connotes the sense of an evil plot between the people
getting married and will intrigue the audience to watch and find out what happens.
• Institution logo: This is presented clearly on the screen and allows the audience to know what
channel, ‘BBC3’, the program is being shown on.
• Synergy with social media: This poster effectively uses different aspects of social media to create
synergy. This includes a website address, a facebook page and a twitter hash tag. By using popular
forms of social media it creates the sense of an existing hype and popularity about the soap which
will attract more viewers to watch the soap and excite them as ‘hashtag Thorn Lane’ has
connotations of a sharp and twisted plot which will be intriguing to watch.
• Brand Identity: The brand identity has been included in the poster where the social media synergy
has been used. This helps to further promote the soap and is effective as the title of the soap has
not been included in the poster.
Conclusion
what I would repeat and why
• What I would repeat:
• EastEnders: From this poster there is not a lot that I would like to repeat ‘Steve Neale’ as I felt that
the poster was of quite a poor quality for such a well known and established soap such as this.
However the one thing I would repeat would be the way in which they have effectively faded the
background which presents the image more clearly and gives it more of a stand out effect which
will catch the attention of the audience.
• Holly Oaks: From this poster I like the way they have presented the image in flames which is
effective as it could get the audience thinking about the deeper meanings behind it and would
intrigue them to watch the soap. Although I would not do flames, I would perhaps repeat ‘Steve
Neale’ this in a similar way.
• Student Work: This was my favorite of the three posters and the way in which it was done was very
effective. From this poster I would like to try and repeat ‘Steve Neale’ the way in which they have
included good brand identity and social media synergy. This was done effectively and gives a good
brand recognition to the product. However if I was to change anything about it, I would perhaps
make it bigger so that it is bolder and more obvious to the audience viewing the poster.
• OCR Recommendations: OCR have recommended that we slightly alter the way that the common
stereotype have done posters as there are not many good examples in the real world so it would
benefit me if I changed or slightly ‘re-invented the wheel’ for my final piece.
