 Earth Day commemorates Earth's unique place in the
universe.
 First Earth Day was conceived by Senator Gaylord Nelson
as an environmental “teach-in” on April 22, 1970.
 Celebrating Earth Day reminds us about Mother Earth.
 It educates the public on issues of concern, to mobilize
political will and resources to address global problems,
and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity.

Earth Day : Story behind the Scene
 On January 28, 1969, a well
drilled by Union Oil Platform A
off the coast of Santa Barbara,
California, blew out. More than
three million gallons of oil
spewed, killing over 10,000
seabirds, dolphins, seals, and sea
lions. As a reaction to this
disaster, activists were mobilized
to create environmental
regulation, environmental
education, and Earth Day.

Significance
 Increased global warming, changing
weather patterns and depleting
resources.
 People have been witnessing shortage of
food.
 Biodiversity loss also means that we are
losing, before discovery, many of nature's
chemicals and genes.
 Terrestrial biodiversity is influenced by
climate variability (i.e. drought,
flooding) .

Theme of the Year -
2020
 The 50th anniversary of Earth Day is
centred around the theme of
“Climate Action” in honour of
worldwide efforts to halt global
warming.
 It will be celebrated with The Great
Global Cleanup, a day dedicated to
removing trash from green spaces and
urban centres.
 “Climate Action” represents the
biggest challenge to the future of

Climate Change : A Major
Concern
 Understanding IPCC’s 3 Special Reports:
 The Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate
 focuses, for the first time, on the importance of
education and climate literacy.
 Climate Change and Land
 Global Warming of 1.5°C
 It warns that average global temperatures could
breach the 1.5-degree level as early as 2030.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the United Nations body for assessing the science
related to climate change.

Changes in sea level, polar
regions & mountain cryosphere
The IPCC Special Report on “the Ocean and Cryosphere in a
Changing Climate” reports
 As glaciers melt and snow cover shrinks, warm-adapted plant
and animal species migrate upslope. Cold-and snow-adapted
species decrease and risk eventual extinction.
 Changing water availability and quality affects households,
agriculture, energy systems, and people.
 Sea level is currently rising more than twice as fast and will
further accelerate reaching up to 1.10m in 2100 if emissions are
not sharply reduced.
 Many low-lying coastal cities and small islands will be exposed
to risks of flooding and land loss annually by 2050.

People, land and climate in
warming world
The IPCC Special Report on “The Climate Change and
Land” reports
 About 23% of human-caused emissions come from
forestry, agriculture and land uses making it impossible to
limit temperature rise to safe levels without altering the
way the world produces food and manages land.
 Desertification will lead to loss of productivity &
ecosystem services.
 Climate change is expected to increase arid biomes &
stress on dry-lands due to increase in temperature and
decrease in precipitation that will impact vegetation,
livestock & people.

Impacts of global warming 1.5°C
At 1.5°C compared to 2°C:
 Less extreme weather where people live, including
extreme heat and rainfall
 By 2100, global mean sea level rise will be around 10 cm
lower but may continue to rise for centuries
 Smaller reductions in yields of maize, rice, wheat
 Global population exposed to increased water shortages is
up to 50% less
 Lower risk to fisheries and the livelihoods that depend on
them
 Up to several hundred million fewer people exposed to
climate-related risk and susceptible to poverty by 2050

Treat Climate Crisis With Same
Urgency As Coronavirus
 Climate crisis was fuelling extreme weather, when
unprecedented wildfires engulfed parts of the Arctic last
summer.
 In mid-May to mid-June 2019, deadlier heatwaves in India
and Pakistan, more than 184 people died in the state of
Bihar, the heat wave coincided with extreme droughts and
water shortages.
 According to the Global Climate Risk Index released by
Germany-based think tank, Germanwatch, India is the
14th most climate change-affected country in the world.

Covid-19 is what will teach us how to
respond to a crisis
 With climate change—it affects human health, food
security, agricultural security, political and economic
stability, and governance.
 Coronavirus is more immediate, but it’s doing the same
thing.
 Are we going to get enough people to understand the
gravity of the problem before it’s devastating in its
impacts and possibly not reversible?

 The more decisively and earlier we act, the more able we will
be to address unavoidable changes, manage risks, improve our
lives and achieve sustainability for ecosystems and people
around the world –today and in the future.
 Highlight is the urgency of prioritizing timely, ambitious and
coordinated action to address widespread and enduring changes
 empower people, communities and governments to tackle the
unprecedented transitions in all aspects of society;
 This challenge requires a coordinated response.
 People with the highest exposure and vulnerability are often
those with the lowest capacity to respond.

 Citizens get involved with efforts to
remove waste from the environment and
drastically improve their communities.
 Events are hosted by schools, college
student associations & local non-profits to
educate and activate people to prevent
plastic pollution.

Organizes an annual Earth Fair -
includes a farmers' market, artisan
vendors & workshops &conferences
on environmental education.
 New York City, New York,
United States
Events include the 5K Green Tour -
called Street Tree Identification
 Vancouver, British Columbia,
Canada
Is known for its Earth Day parade.

 In Italy – One of the event’s focus
was on the 2030 Agenda & the UN
Sustainable Development Goals
through five talk shows dedicated
to the 5Ps of sustainability:
People, Planet, Prosperity,
Partnership, Peace.
 In Philippines -
Earth Day Run is an annual event
hosted by NatGeo.
 Zero Waste Colchester Recycling
Expo 2018: The goal of this Earth
Day event in Colchester, UK was
to inspire and promote the repair,
reuse, and recycling of all
materials to a wider audience.

 Kicking the Plastic Bag Addiction: A Plan for Response to
Plastic Pollution: Representatives from nations around the
world met in New York on April 20, 2018 for a roundtable
co-hosted by the Government of Quebec, Earth Day
Network, and New York University.
 Many other events like School, colleges host organic food
sale to raise money and help plant trees.
 Activities like recycling games & environmental arts and
crafts. Students & citizens learn and develop action plans
to improve waste management practices.
